Logan clearly hadn't expected her to wait all this time just to ask about his medical results.
He paused for a second before replying flatly, "Everything's fine."
Stella nodded. "Good. That's good."
"Logan, I know you've forgotten me, and I know you're completely satisfied with your life right now. But if I don't say this, and you regain your memory one day, you'll blame me for giving up on you without a fight."
Stella's voice was laced with profound sorrow. "I already told Skylar that after today, I will never bother you two again. But please, just give me a few minutes to finish. Okay?"
Seeing her red-rimmed eyes and the raw agony swimming in her gaze, Logan frowned, but he gave a curt nod.
Stella sniffled, fighting back her tears as she slowly recounted how her mother had died when she was little, and how he had taken her hand and promised to protect her forever.
She reminded him of how kids used to mock her teardrop mole as a curse, and how he stubbornly got a matching tattoo just to make her feel better.
She told him how he feared she'd be bullied when he was supposed to study abroad, so he relentlessly fought his father and transferred schools just to stay by her side.
And how they went to college together, supporting each other through every hurdle...
"Even though our parents opposed it, we promised to announce our relationship right after graduation. But then the accident happened right before we finished school."
By this point, tears were streaming down Stella's face. "Lolo, I don't know why you woke up loving someone else, but every word I've said is true... If you don't believe me, you can look at these photos."
Stella unlocked her phone and held the open album out to him.
Logan didn't take the phone. Staring at a sobbing Stella, an inexplicable flare of irritation flared in his chest.
Those scattered fragments she mentioned—he felt a faint, blurry echo of them deep in his mind. Yet, emotionally, he felt absolutely nothing, as if he were listening to a stranger's life story.
She gripped the stone table and slowly sank onto the bench, taking a long time to weather the suffocating wave of despair tearing through her chest.
"I..." The moment she opened her mouth, her throat seized up so tightly she couldn't form a sentence. Her tears fell harder, splashing against the stone table and leaving dark, wet stains across the surface.
Watching her break down, Logan felt a strange tightness seize his chest, accompanied by a sharp throbbing in his temples. He reached up and rubbed his forehead.
"Logan!"
Skylar walked over, naturally linking her arm through his. "How did it go? Are you two finished talking?"
Logan nodded. "Yeah."
Skylar glanced at Stella, whose face was completely drenched in tears, clinging to the stone table just to stay upright. She asked with sickening sweetness, "Stella, are you okay? Do you want me to help you find a doctor?"
