As soon as Winona finished speaking, the girls around her quickly chimed in.
“Exactly! She has to pay for it.”
“Of course she should pay. A dress like this is incredibly delicate. It’s ruined even if it gets soaked in water, let alone liquor.”
Rhea bit her lip, her voice trembling. “It’s only right that I compensate you. How much is it?”
Winona let out a soft scoff. “Since we’re classmates, I’ll drop the loose change. Nine hundred grand.”
“N-Nine hundred grand?”
Rhea’s eyes practically bugged out of her head.
What kind of dress cost nine hundred grand?
Was Winona trying to scam her?
“You can’t just lie to me just because I’m poor,” she said, her voice shaking, though a fierce stubbornness shone in her eyes.
Before Winona could respond, the girls around her burst into laughter. The low, mocking giggles pierced the air, dripping with absolute disdain.
It struck right at Rhea’s fragile pride. She looked desperately toward Herbert for help.
Herbert tightened his jaw and opened his mouth to speak.
Having caught their little silent exchange, Winona cut him off immediately. “You can keep your mouth shut. This has absolutely nothing to do with you.”
Herbert froze. He had grown up alongside Winona, and she had always greeted him with a beaming smile. This was the very first time she had ever spoken to him with such icy dismissal.
The dress was soaked and clinging uncomfortably to her skin. Right now, Winona just wanted to go to the lounge and change. She stepped right up to Rhea.
Rhea was barely over five foot three, while Winona stood nearly five foot seven.
Winona reached out and patted Rhea’s shoulder. Leaning in slightly, her long hair cascading over her collarbone, the sharp scent of alcohol mixed with her faint, signature jasmine perfume. “If you don’t believe me, check the official website yourself. I’ll give you two days to get the money together. I’ll text you my bank account number on Monday when school starts.”
