“Gilbert’s not the only one hurt here! Why is everything always about him?”

Her face still hurt from where he’d hit her. And her leg-when the vase hit Wendy, it had struck Sherry’s leg too.

She hadn’t realized it before, but now she could see blood seeping through the white fabric.

Everyone was busy taking care of Gilbert.

Only Sherry stood there, pale and unnoticed. Nobody asked how she was doing.

She felt unsteady on her feet. When had she become so fragile?

She looked like a strong breeze could knock her down-yet no one reached out to help.

Tyrone’s heart skipped a beat. How had Sherry become the one who looked most pitiful?

She was the one who’d started all this trouble-so why did she seem like the victim here?

But when the doctor called him over and he turned back, Sherry was gone.

When Sherry got home, her leg began to hurt so much she could hardly walk.

She found the first-aid kit and treated the wound herself. It was worse than she’d thought.

Mary wasn’t home. On Mondays, she usually went back home to take care of her family.

The house felt terribly empty.

As if the world thought she wasn’t miserable enough, the living room light bulb burned out.

The whole place reflected how she felt inside.

Like a big, hollow space with cold air blowing through. Sherry kept telling herself, “It’s okay.”

But the more she tried, the worse she felt.

With only the lonely silence of the empty house around her, everything seemed worthless and sad.

Finally, she curled up, held her injured leg, and began to dry.

She had to face it-she was jealous.

Gilbert had people worrying about him, standing up for him.

And her?

She remembered being a happy child.

But only when she was very young.

Even back then, she’d always tried her best to be kind to everyone. She would have done anything for the people she loved.

Not that love should be about keeping score, but she hadn’t even received basic kindness in return.

Now she had nothing. She could die alone in this big house and no one would even know.

Maybe someone who failed at life this badly didn’t deserve to be in this world.

“A ghost! It’s a female ghost!”

A man’s voice rose to a comical pitch.

He crept inside on unsteady legs, using the faint moonlight from outside to see.

Sherry watched as his eyes rolled back-he froze like a crashed computer.

His eyes focused, he took two steps, then they rolled back again and he froze. This kept happening.

It took him over ten minutes to shuffle the short distance to where Sherry sat.

He saw someone on the couch—a woman with messy hair and red, crying eyes.

Thud!

He fell straight back, flat on the floor.

But he had this crazy, blissed-out smile on his face.

Two minutes later, he came to.

Sherry was just staring at him, cold and silent. Maybe he fainted so much he’d built up a tolerance-his eyes started to roll back but then snapped forward.

Finally, he really saw her. “Sherry? Why are you sitting here in the dark like a ghost?”

“The lights are broken.”

She was about to ask Tyrone why he’d come.

Of all Gilbert’s friends, he was probably the only one she even recognized,

Last time Gilbert forgot a contract, Tyrone had come to the house to get it.

Tyrone didn’t answer-he went to look at the wiring. “Whoever fixed this was an idiot. None of these screws are tight. It’s a total fire hazard.”

Sherry said, “I fixed it.”

It had been a night just like this. Gilbert said he was coming home for dinner. He hadn’t eaten at home in days.

She’d been so happy. She got everything ready early, planning to start cooking the moment he walked in.
