He clasped his hands together, batting his glossy eyes at Lucas. “You all don’t get it—younger guys aren’t like old ones. They’re wild, full of fire… way better than those boring old men.”
Everyone else rolled their eyes.
Yeah, they talked trash about Lucas behind his back sometimes, calling him a kid pretending to be a tough boss. But like Lucas said-they had each other’s backs, no matter what.
And they hated when people came in and messed up their company vibe.
Sherry listened to everyone fussing over her, and it hit her hard-she hadn’t felt this warm since she was 10. After that, all she got was nonstop blame.
Everyone blamed her-even Gilbert, the guy who later swore he loved her. She’d always told herself she didn’t care what people thought of her.
She knew she’d done nothing wrong.
But late at night, when she was all alone, doubts crept in.
Is there something wrong with me? Is that why nobody likes me? Why do they treat me like trash?,
Am I really just faking everything, like everyone says?
But in that moment, she knew for sure-it wasn’t her. It was them. The people around her now? They were the normal ones, the good ones.
But Sherry was scared, too.
Gilbert had been normal once, too. A good guy, even.
Then what happened?
He turned into just like her family-cold, cruel, and unfair.
Except for Yelena, Sherry kept everyone else at a distance. She was terrified they’d change on her, too. She didn’t know if she could handle that heartache again.

Maura was almost at the company’s front door when it hit her-nobody was coming to stop her.
Only the three girls on her team were chasing after her Let’s be real, it was just her plus two others, all girls.
Dorothy huffed, “Now what? That bitch’s taken over! Everyone’s sucking up to her. Are these people blind? How can they side with her over you?”
Ruby stamped her foot. “And Mr. Harrison? There’s no way he’s into that girl already! Maura, you’re way

out of her league-he should be into you first, not some random newbie!”
“What’s even so special about Sherry, anyway?”
Okay, fine-Sherry was pretty. She had that going for her.

But Maura was confident in herself. Lucas was the guy she’d set her sights on, and their little tricks had never failed before.
So why isn’t it working with him?
When she heard the name again, Maura’s eyes blew wide. “Wait-what did you say that girl’s name is?”
“Sherry!”
She can’t be Sherry. There’s no way it’s anything but a coincidence. Just two girls with the same name.
“She ain’t from Seaseat City, is she?” Maura said, laughing a bitter, mean laugh.
“She is from Seaseat City!” The two girls said it like it was no big deal, totally missing the way Maura’s face darkened.
“Seaseat City’s developed-we have few people from there. No clue why she moved here. Probably ’cause everyone thinks she’s new and cool. Mr. Harrison must think so too.”
Maura grabbed her phone and pulled up Sherry’s picture. As soon as she confirmed it was the same girl, her usual stuck-up attitude came rushing back.
“Sherry… you filthy bitch. You’re everywhere, ruining my plans!”
She stormed toward the door, firing orders. “You two-get me in front of Mr. Harrison. Do whatever it takes. I swear to God, Sherry will be gone for good. I’ll make sure she’s kicked out.”
And those two? They didn’t waste a second-they did exactly what she told them.
Sherry was sitting at her desk when the two girls burst in.
“Mr. Harrison! Emergency! Maura fainted!” They screamed it like it was life or death.
Fainted?
She ran out of the building like a bull, full of rage and energy.
Sherry figured it out in half a second-it was a fake faint, plain and simple.
But she had no idea what Lucas would do about it.
“What are you doing sitting here?!” The two girls gaped at Sherry, like she’d committed a crime.
The office was big, yeah-but it was still one room.
