“Look, Mr. Harrison-Maura’s got a huge ego. Right before she fainted, she said she had something super important to tell you. The way she looked, the way she sounded? It had to be big.”

Lucas glared at them, not saying a word. Then he spoke up, dry as dust. “You two really think I’m dumb? I go over there, and she’ll just pop up awake to tell me this important thing?”

The two girls turned beet-red, totally awkward. They had nothing to say back, so they just slunk out of the office with their tails between their legs.

Sherry stared at Lucas, wide-eyed. “Why are you so… normal? For real?”

The words slipped out before she could stop them. She shook her head right after, feeling stupid for making such a big fuss.

So guys

could actually say no to that crap. They could just call an ambulance instead of playing the hero.

Didn’t Gilbert know that?

Of course he did. Before Wendy showed up, he’d been normal too-just like Lucas.

He just hadn’t met someone he played favorites with yet.

Once he did, his heart got all lopsided-so bad, he didn’t even realize it himself.

Lucas is acting normal now. But what if he meets someone he can’t get over one day? Will he end up being just as awful?

“What are you thinking about?” Lucas asked.

Sherry’s eyes are totally wandering, just like they did during our fight last time. Doesn’t she worry she’ll miss something important-something that could help her stick up for herself-when she gones out like this?

“I was thinking… about someone you can’t let go of,” Sherry mumbled.

Again, the words came out before she thought. She clamped a hand over her mouth right away, panicking.

“No! That’s not what I meant!” Her face turned bright red.

What if he misreadsme?

A divorced woman saying something like that to him? How conceited.

“I don’t have one,” Lucas said.

“Huh?” Sherry blinked, totally confused. She hadn’t expected that answer.

“No one I can’t let go of. Just someone I care about… and she’s right here.” Lucas locked eyes with her, his gaze full of meaning-like she should know who he meant.

Sherry didn’t ask any more questions. She was just relieved to move past the awkward moment.

Lucas didn’t push it either. He handed her a black card. “Since you’ll be going to all kinds of events with me, you’ll need lots of clothes. I had Angel Shop save some for you. Buy whatever else you want-don’t skimp. There will be tons more events later.

“I can’t go with you, though. There’s a last-minute meeting at the harbor. I might not make it back tonight.”

Sherry held the black card in her hand.

Gilbert had a black card too. But it always ended up with Wendy, with Melissa, even with Scott-never her.

All Sherry had was a regular card.

He’d put 100 grand in it every month. Once, she’d thought that was more than enough-no need to waste money on silly stuff.

But she’d learned her lesson. If she didn’t spend Gilbert’s money, someone else would. Every penny she saved was just for someone else to splurge on.

In the end, someone else got to enjoy all the things she’d skipped out on-all the nice clothes, all the fancy stuff.

And let’s be real-her clothes were pretty shabby.

She knew the Harrison family was powerful, though she didn’t know how powerful. But she couldn’t make his big company look bad-not on her watch.

“Okay. I’ll head to Angel Shop right now.”

Sherry knew all about Angel Shop.

It was the only mall people from Seaseat City would make a special trip to King City to shop at.

Most of the clothes there were perfect for work-fancy, but not too much, and all designed by famous people.

As soon as Sherry walked in, she was blown away by how fancy it was.

Everyone there was rich or powerful-mostly women, with guys tagging along.

And the guys could tell your status right off the bat-only rich folks shopped here, after all.

Sherry planned to pick up the custom clothes Lucas ordered first, check them out, and buy more if she needed to.

The rest of the mall was packed, but the counter with her clothes was almost empty-super exclusive.
