Wendy gasped, hand flying to her mouth like she couldn’t believe it. “Top families only hit up Angel Shop for first drops! Every other store just gets last-season junk. You’re better off getting a different brand. Tryna cop high-end but going to the wrong spot? That’s embarrassing.”

Then she turned to the crowd. “Sherry just does dishes and cleans houses all day-she doesn’t know jack about this stuff. Sorry you all had to witness that.”

Everyone had that knowing look on their face.

So she’s basically a maid, right?

Every look they gave Sherry was straight-up disrespectful.

After everyone left that day, Lore lost her mind. “Look at the wife you picked! She’s only here to make me look like a fool in front of everyone! Did she wear that on purpose to say I’m treating her bad?”

Gilbert was ticked too, barking at Sherry. “Sherry, the birthday party was supposed to be fun! You had to ruin it for everybody. Happy now? You can’t even buy a halfway decent dress-what can you do?”

He yelled at her so bad she couldn’t even hold her head up.

Now, that same guy who swore he’d never step foot in a women’s mall was strutting through Angel Shop with Wendy and a bunch of bodyguards-super flashy.

Even people walking by stared, gawking at them like they were celebrities, trying to figure out who they were. It made Wendy feel like a queen-exactly what she wanted.

Gilbert didn’t just bring Wendy-he made a whole production out of it.

A crowd even started hanging around to watch.

People were chatting up a storm.

“Whoa, that guy’s so hot!”

“Heard the salesgirl say he’s not just some rich kid-he’s a CEO! A young, hot CEO? That’s one in a

million!”

“I’m so jealous of that girl! She’s obviously spoiled silly. If a guy took me shopping like this, I’d be in

heaven.”

Wendy leaned in to Sherry. “Oops, sorry Sherry. I was gonna come alone, but Gilbert wouldn’t let me. Can’t stop him, you know?”

Gilbert saw all the emotions swirling in Sherry’s eyes-hurt, anger, sadness.

He’d been waiting for Sherry to hit him up for days-giving her chance after chance.

But Sherry hadn’t texted or called once.

He slung an arm around Wendy’s shoulders. “Why waste your breath explaining to her? She ain’t worth it. I wanna come with you-who’s gonna stop me?”

He blew Sherry off completely, walking up to the manager inside. “I need a dress for my date. Nothing but the best-she can’t let anyone outshine her.”

The manager smiled, reaching for the dress on the top shelf.

But Wendy stopped him dead in his tracks. “Why not the one in the middle?”

Everybody knew the middle dress was the store’s star piece-the absolute best of the best.

Sherry had worn the best dress once, and it’d been bugging Wendy ever since.

She’d lost to Sherry that time. This time? No way she was gonna let anyone steal her thunder-not again.

After all, people from King City would be at the gala too.

She was gonna show off her looks and outshine all those socialites from King City!

The manager smiled politely. “Sorry, Ms. Mack, but that dress is already taken.”

Wendy played it cool. “Call the person who reserved it. Tell ’em we’ll pay more. Let ’em know who we are- they’ll back down. They know they can’t mess with us.”

She said it loud enough for the whole crowd to hear-all cocky, dead set on getting that dress.

The manager laughed awkwardly. “I could do that for anyone else, but the person who reserved it? They’re from the Harrison family-out of King City.”

Gilbert’s face fell when he heard “Harrison family.” He panicked, scared Wendy would say something dumb, so he jumped in fast. “The Harrison family-they’re the richest folks in King City.”

But the Harrison family was way more than just rich.

Gilbert’s family wasn’t scared to stand up to most other families.

In Seaseat City, they were the top dogs-nobody could touch them. But in King City? There were a few families he didn’t dare mess with. The Harrison family was one of them.
