Iris shifted uncomfortably, her cheeks flushed as she changed her sanitary pad and freshened up with antiseptic wipes.
When she moved to wash her hands, Julian reached over, turned on the warm water, and guided her hands under the stream, gently rubbing and rinsing them before carefully drying each finger with a soft towel.
Iris watched him–his handsome features, the quiet concentration on his face–and felt a warmth spread through her chest.
Julian kept his gaze lowered, a faint smile playing at the corner of his mouth. “Do I look good?” he murmured, almost teasingly.
Iris blinked, pulled from her thoughts. “Huh?”
“Am I good–looking?” Julian repeated, still holding her hand. He stopped drying and lifted his eyes to meet hers.
Her heart gave a little jump. Suddenly shy, she pressed her lips together and nodded with a small smile. “Yes, you are. Really handsome.”
Julian’s smile widened, his eyes softening. “Give me a kiss.”
“What?” Iris startled slightly.
“Kiss me,” he said quietly, lowering his head and bringing his lips close to her face.
Iris felt her face grow even warmer. She shook her head shyly.
Julian’s voice was gentle, coaxing. “Consider it a thank–you for doing your laundry.”
Iris looked at him–his striking face, the almost humble way he asked—and her resistance melted.
She cupped his cheeks and pressed a light kiss to his lips.
He took over instantly.
The kiss felt like it lasted an eternity, leaving her breathless and lightheaded by the time he finally pulled away, reluctance in his movements.
Together they hung up the laundry, then headed downstairs for dinner–or more accurately, a late–night snack.

Early the next morning, an unexpected visitor arrived at the house: Julian’s father, Frederick.
He walked in carrying several large bags, a wide smile on his face, swapped his shoes for slippers, and made himself at home as if he belonged there.
Iris was in the living room playing with Beatrice and Harper. She froze in surprise at the sight of him.
Frederick set down his bags and opened his arms. “Harper, sweetheart, did you miss Grandpa?”
Harper ran over gleefully. “Grandpa!”
Frederick scooped her up and kissed her forehead, his eyes full of affection. “Grandpa missed you so much.”
“I missed you too, Grandpa!”
Beatrice frowned, her voice sharp. “What are you doing here?”
Frederick settled on the couch with Harper in his lap. “Mom, I came to check on you. You haven’t called in days–I was worried.”
Iris felt deeply uneasy. She stood up, ready to slip out of the room.
Frederick turned his beaming smile toward her. “Iris, is Julian not home?”
Iris was taken aback by his familiar tone.
He’d dropped her last name and spoken as if they were close–and worse, he’d initiated conversation before she’d even greeted him.
Frederick had always disliked her, looked down on her, avoided speaking to her whenever possible.
Now his behavior felt unsettlingly out of character.
“He had an important meeting this morning,” she replied flatly. “He should be back around
noon.”

“Ah,” Frederick said eagerly. He stood and moved to one of his bags, unzipping it. “Winter’s coming soon. The asparagus over at the ranch is incredibly tender right now. I heard you baby corn, so I went out yesterday and picked some fresh for you.”
Iris was speechless.

Beatrice looked equally stunned.
For a moment they both stood frozen, then exchanged identical glances of disbelief.
Frederick held out a bag full of fresh–picked asparagus, still smiling expectantly.
When Iris didn’t take it, his expression faltered slightly. He turned and called for the housekeeper, handing her the baby corn instead.

Then he pulled out an elegant velvet jewelry box and approached Iris again, his tone now dripping with sincerity.
“Iris, this is a family heirloom my mother gave to Julian’s mother—a pair of bracelets, absolutely priceless. After Julian’s mother passed, my current wife kept them safe. But now that you and Julian are together, and you’ve blessed the Everhart family with a beautiful granddaughter… well, you’re the one who deserves these. I made a point to bring them. They belong with you now.”
