Harper ran over to her mother and wrapped her arms tightly around her leg. Even at her young age, she sensed the strange tension in the room and fixed her big, round eyes on Frederick, watching him warily.
Beatrice let out a cold laugh. “So now you remember she’s your daughter–in–law? Who was it back then saying Iris wasn’t good enough for the Everhart family? Who pushed Julian to file for divorce?”
Frederick closed the jewelry box and spoke in a subdued tone. “Iris, do I need to get down on my knees? You can’t just take Harper and marry someone else. She’s my granddaughter. Letting her grow up without the Everhart last name is already more than I can bear–don’t make her call another man Grandpa.”
Iris‘ eyes narrowed.
Remarry? So that was it–the real reason for his sudden change of heart. He was afraid of losing his granddaughter.
Her voice turned cool. “That’s between Julian and me. I don’t need you begging me.”
Frederick hurriedly turned and pulled a folder from his briefcase. “Look, these are titles to some vacant lots I own no buildings yet, but the land is valuable.” He then laid out several car keys. “And these are for the luxury cars in the garage. Pick whichever one you like.”
Beatrice thumped her cane against the floor. “You fool! Do you really think Iris cares about of that?”
“I know, I know!” Frederick flustered, stumbling over his words. “I just want to make things right.”

Iris could tell his regret was genuine, but she kept her guard up. “You don’t have to do all this.”
“As long as you don’t remarry and take Harper away, you can have whatever you want,” Frederick insisted, pressing the items into her hands. Then he turned and scooped Harper up. “But if you insist on marrying again, fine–Harper stays. She’s an Everhart.”
Iris carefully set everything down on the coffee table. “Who told you I was remarrying?”
“Julian did. Was he lying to me?” Frederick frowned.
Iris pressed her lips together, holding back a sigh. Internally, she cursed Julian for being so dramatic, but she kept up appearances and didn’t expose his lie. “He wasn’t lying.”
Beatrice looked startled. Her face paled as she asked uneasily, “Iris, are you really planning to

Iris didn’t answer her grandmother directly. “Why don’t the two of you talk for a minute? I need to make a call.”
With that, she turned and headed to her room.
Once inside, Iris shut the door and immediately called Julian.
He picked up after two rings. “Hey.”
“Julian,” she said, her voice low, “why did you tell your father I was remarrying?”
On the other end, Julian chuckled softly, a lazy, teasing note in his tone. “What, has he already shown up?”
“He’s in the living room right now. Brought the family emerald set, a stack of property deeds, and a handful of car keys to win me over,” Iris replied, unconsciously twisting the hem of her shirt. “What’s your real game here?”
Julian’s voice grew serious. “Iris, you know exactly what I want.”
“I don’t,” she said, though her tone wavered.
“I want to marry you,” Julian said, each word deliberate. “I want us to get married again.”
Iris fell silent, her gaze dropping to the floor. Every time this subject came up, her chest felt heavy.
A divorced woman never quite feels secure.
She was afraid the happiness they had now was only surface–deep–that if they married again, the same old patterns would repeat.
The rustle of papers came through the phone, as if Julian was sorting through documents. “My father’s the type who only appreciates what he’s about to lose. I haven’t forgotten how he treated my mom all those years, or how he treated you. I won’t forgive him for it, but he’s still my dad. That’s not something I can change.”
Iris walked to the window and looked out at the lush greenery in the yard. “So you’re using this to provoke him?”
“He might not have approved of you, but he genuinely adores his grandchildren. Trust me— from now on, he’ll be more afraid than anyone that you might take Harper away from me.”
“I see.”

“Iris, you’ve found his weak spot. He won’t give you any more trouble from here on.”

“Iris,” Julian said, his voice softening, “let’s get remarried. What do you say?”
Iris released a long, slow breath.
A heavy silence stretched between them.
He was waiting. She was hesitating. The air felt thick with unspoken weight.
After what felt like a long time, Iris spoke again, her voice barely above a whisper. “Julian…”
“I’m here.”
“Does it have to be remarriage? We’re living together now. It’s practically the same as being married.”
