Cayden spoke up, “Harold phoned me last night asking for forgiveness. He mentioned his daughter Lily was taken into custody. What exactly happened?”

Julian’s stomach dropped.

Was Cayden going to hold him responsible for not keeping Iris safe?

Swallowing nervously, Julian began, “It was my fault. I didn’t protect Iris well enough–I left an opening. But everything turned out alright in the end. Iris wasn’t hurt. Still, I’m to blame-”

Cayden raised a hand to stop him. “No, no… don’t say that. I’m not blaming you. My daughter is sitting right here safe and sound. I should be thanking you.”

Iris smiled to herself, while Julian discreetly wiped a bead of cold sweat from his temple.

Cayden’s expression grew serious as he turned to Iris. “Sweetheart, when are you and Julian planning to make things official again?”

Julian’s heart jumped.

He hadn’t expected his future father–in–law to step in like this, urging Iris toward marriage on his behalf. He watched Iris eagerly, holding his breath.

Iris looked puzzled. “Dad, I just got back home not long ago. Are you trying to marry me off already?”

Cayden backpedaled quickly, waving his hands. “No, that’s not what I meant. Your… well, Julian’s father called me. He mentioned Harper will be starting kindergarten soon. It’s not ideal for a child when her parents are divorced. If teachers or other parents find out, there could be talk— maybe even some judgment. Kids can be cruel, and if Harper overhears anything hurtful, she’s too young to process it. It could really affect her emotionally. I think Julian’s dad has a point. You two should consider making it legal again soon.”

Iris and Julian exchanged a knowing smile.

Julian leaned close to Iris‘ ear, his voice a low murmur. “Never thought the man who tried so hard to keep us apart would be the one pushing us to tie the knot now.”

Iris nodded, amusement in her eyes. “He’s really pulling out all the stops–even calling my dad to make his case.”

Cayden watched them with a warm smile. “What are you two whispering about over there? Planning the wedding already?”

Iris grinned and nodded. “Something like that, yes.”

Julian stared at her, stunned.

Cayden beamed. “Well, that’s wonderful. You two work out the details and keep us in the loop.”

Taking Julian’s hand, Iris stood up. “Dad, Julian has some things to take care of. I’ll walk him

out.”

Cayden nodded approvingly.

Julian felt completely dazed, as if he were floating through a dream. His heart hammered wildly in his chest, every nerve on edge. Iris led him out of Whitmore Manor, all the way to the car parked just beyond the garden gate. Even then, he seemed miles away.

Noticing he hadn’t moved to get in, Iris looked up at him, a soft smile on her face. “What’s wrong?”

Julian drew a steadying breath, his throat tight. “Were you just saying that to please your dad… or do you really want to marry me?”

Iris dropped her gaze, her cheeks flushing slightly. Her tone turned shy. “What do you think?”

Julian shook his head slowly, uncertainty clouding his eyes. “I don’t know. I just know you’ve never really wanted to remarry me. You don’t trust me enough—not with us, not with marriage.”

Iris kept her eyes down, her voice barely above a whisper but clear. “I don’t want you to propose again. We’ve already been through one divorce. If you ever treat me badly, I’ll just divorce you again.”

“I won’t.” Finally understanding her meaning, Julian’s eyes grew watery. Emotion roughened his voice. “I won’t ever make you sad or hurt you again. I won’t repeat those mistakes. I won’t let you down.”

Iris bit her lip, moved by his sincerity. Seeing how emotional he’d become, her own eyes started to sting. “Okay.”

Julian pulled her into a tight embrace, tucking her against his chest as if he could keep her safe within his very heartbeat. His eyes, now red–rimmed, glistened with unshed tears. “Thank you, Iris,” he said hoarsely. “Thank you for giving me another chance. Thank you for being willing to marry me.”

He closed his eyes, and two quiet tears traced paths down his cheeks.
