Upon hearing that, both Zoe and Daniel turned their eyes toward her, curious to know who she
was.
Brandon was somewhat taken aback. His impression of Yvette was that during holiday gatherings, she would spend the whole day tucked away in a corner, immersed in reading online fiction, hardly speaking a word.
Realizing she had overstepped, Yvette grew flustered and began apologizing repeatedly, “I’m sorry… that was out of line.”
Noticing the girl’s embarrassment–and sensing she had a point–Zoe stood up and said to Brandon, “Let’s step outside and talk.”
Yvette quickly moved aside.
Brandon followed Zoe out of the banquet hall.
For a moment, Yvette simply stood there, watching Brandon’s retreating figure, her eyes filled with a quiet sadness.
She lowered her head and let out a long breath. Just as she was about to return to her seat, Daniel’s voice reached her. “If you’re into Brandon, why help him get closer to another woman?”
Yvette froze, then looked toward the man who had spoken.
He was strikingly handsome, with delicate, almost pretty features and a faintly roguish charm.
“No, you’ve got it wrong,” she replied softly. She offered a slight nod before turning to walk
away.
Hurrying back to where she had been sitting, she found her father still chatting merrily with Cayden, completely unaware of her brief absence.
She picked up her glass of ice water and took a sip, then couldn’t help glancing in the direction Brandon had gone.
A dull ache spread through her chest–bitter and unmistakable.
She had kept her feelings so carefully hidden; how had this stranger seen right through her?
The truth was, she’d had a crush on Brandon for six years.
They first met at a cocktail party.

Brandon likely didn’t remember her at all, but for Yvette, it was love at first sight. When someone bumped into her deliberately, splashing red wine across the front of her white gown, the room seemed to laugh at her embarrassment.
It was Brandon who had taken off his suit jacket and draped it around her shoulders.
Back then, she didn’t even know his name, but she was already completely captivated.
She saw him again a year later, right after her car accident.
Had Brandon not been passing by, she might have been trapped in that wreck, with no escape from the flames.
Unlike others who could boldly pursue someone they liked, Yvette could only bury her feelings deep inside.
Because her father was Cayden’s business associate–and because Brandon had once saved her -their families made a point of visiting each other during the holidays each year.
Those visits were her only legitimate chance to see him.
Now it seemed Brandon’s heart was set on someone else. There was no point in hoping for
more.
When Cayden noticed her return, he asked kindly, “Yvette, weren’t you with Brandon just now?”
Yvette replied quickly, “He went to the restroom. I got a little hungry, so I came back to grab another bite.”
She picked up her fork and took a piece of grilled meat.
Cayden chuckled. “Sure, help yourself.”
Yvette forced a smile and ate the meat, though it seemed to have no flavor.
Cayden leaned in slightly. “So, Yvette, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?”
Yvette hesitated, not wanting to reveal too much. She offered an awkward smile.
Ralph jumped in cheerfully. “Oh, she loves reading–novels, graphic novels, you name it. Her place is stacked with them.”
Yvette cringed inwardly and subtly tugged her father’s sleeve.
Ralph didn’t catch the hint. “Reading’s a good thing! Why shouldn’t I mention it?”

Cayden laughed warmly. “She must have a kind heart. Do you work, Yvette?”

“She sure does–stays busy,” Ralph answered, sounding especially proud. “Runs her own clothing design company. Has her own brand, her own factory, and manages several online stores. She even does live streams on all the major platforms. Handles everything from design to production to sales herself.”
Cayden gave an approving nod. “That’s impressive, Yvette. Twenty–five and already a founder
and CEO.”
Yvette shifted uncomfortably. “Please, Cayden, my dad’s exaggerating. It’s just a small business.”
“Don’t sell yourself short,” Cayden said sincerely.
Ralph patted Cayden on the shoulder. “Since we get along so well, how about we make this official and become in–laws?”
Cayden’s face brightened. He shook Ralph’s hand enthusiastically. “That’d be wonderful. Which of your daughters are you thinking of for my son?”
