“Are you allergic to romance or something?” Daniel let out an exasperated laugh, shaking his head with a sigh.
“Not romance,” Zoe replied lightly, turning to look at him. “But cheesy lines? Yeah, those give me a rash.”
As she finished speaking, her gaze drifted past Daniel and landed on Brandon at the neighboring table.
His eyes–deep and serious–were fixed directly on them.
When she caught the loneliness and hurt in his stare, her heart gave a little stumble.
Quickly looking away, she tensed up and took a slow sip of wine, trying to settle the unease spreading in her chest.
She wasn’t anything to Brandon, so why did she feel guilty?
But Brandon was too exceptional, too good–the kind of person anyone would naturally admire.
And that was precisely why she felt she didn’t measure up.
She knew herself well, and she’d never allowed even the slightest emotional investment where he was concerned.
Against her own reluctance, she glanced toward him again.
Brandon was still watching her.
The moment their eyes met once more, he stood up as if to come over.
But just as he rose, a middle–aged man in a tailored suit and a young, pretty woman intercepted him.
Zoe slowly averted her eyes, picked up her fork, and returned to her meal.
Brandon looked at the man now blocking his path, shook his hand politely, and said, “Mr. Jensen, it’s been a while.”
The man named Ralph Jensen broke into a broad smile. “Brandon, good to see you. You remember Yvette, don’t you?”
Brandon shifted his attention to the woman beside Ralph.

She appeared to be in her mid–twenties, dressed in an elegant knee–length sheath dress. Her features were soft and refined–the classic girl–next–door type.
She looked faintly familiar, but he couldn’t quite place her.
Ralph prompted him, “My youngest daughter, Yvette Jensen. Three years ago, right after she got her license, she swerved off the road and hit a tree. You were passing by and pulled her out. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten–if you hadn’t shown up when you did, she could’ve been trapped in that car.”
Recognition finally dawned on Brandon’s face, and he offered an apologetic smile. “Right, I remember. Is Ms. Jensen doing all right now?”
“The fracture in her ankle healed after about a year of rest, and she’s been fine ever since. We’ve stopped by your family’s New Year’s gathering every winter. It hasn’t even been a year—you’ve forgotten already?”
“No, I haven’t forgotten,” Brandon replied, his smile growing somewhat awkward.
Yvette had always been quiet and reserved, often sitting off to the side where she was easy to overlook.
Truthfully, Brandon didn’t have much of an impression of her.
Ralph turned to Yvette and encouraged her, “Go on, say hello to Brandon.”
Yvette stepped forward, gave a polite nod, and said in a gentle, soft voice, “Hello, Brandon.”
“Hello,” Brandon replied, his attention already drifting back toward Zoe almost instinctively.
Just as he was about to make an excuse to step away, Cayden walked over, warmly shaking Ralph’s hand. “Ralph, forgive me for not greeting you sooner. My apologies.”
Ralph chuckled and patted Cayden on the shoulder. “Don’t mention it, Cayden. This wedding of yours is the talk of the town. I’m honored to be here.”
Yvette then nodded courteously. “Hello, Mr. Whitmore.”
Cayden smiled as he looked her over. “Yvette, you grow more lovely every year–so graceful and poised. Seeing anyone special these days?”
Yvette lowered her eyes shyly and shook her head.
Cayden immediately seized the opening. “Well, Brandon here is single too. What a
coincidence.”

Chapter 377 Hidden Feelings
What a coincidence?
What kind of remark was that? Brandon was utterly speechless.

It seemed like every woman his father met, he had to ask if she was dating or married.
Being thirty–two felt like a crime–as if he’d be sentenced to life if he didn’t find a wife soon. As long as some woman was willing to have him, his father didn’t seem to care about anything else -tall or short, divorced or widowed, just someone to marry him off.
At this rate, since Brandon had never even been in a serious relationship, his father was probably worried he was either impotent or gay.
That “what a coincidence” comment made Yvette blush faintly.
Cayden and Ralph exchanged knowing smiles, clasped each other’s hands, and announced they were going to share a drink.
As they turned to leave, Cayden specifically added, “Brandon, make sure Yvette is well looked after.”
Ralph chimed in, “Yvette, keep Brandon company for a while. I’m going to have a few with Cayden.”
With that, the two men walked off.
Yvette nodded, though she looked slightly nervous.
When she turned back, she realized Brandon was already walking away.
She hurried to catch up.
Brandon made his way to Zoe and Daniel’s table.
In a polite, subdued tone, he asked, “Ms. Ellison, could we speak alone for a moment?”
Daniel was taken aback, glancing from Brandon to Zoe.
