Half an hour later, Brandon had freshened up and changed into a relaxed hoodie before making his way downstairs.
Yvette was leaning on her hand, eyes fixed on her sketchpad, lost in thought.
He took a seat on the sofa across from her, but she didn’t even notice.
“Uncle, look what I drew–isn’t it pretty?” Harper’s voice finally pulled Yvette back to the
moment.
Brandon lifted the little girl into his arms, his smile warm and gentle. “Let me see…”
He studied the drawing with genuine appreciation. “It’s beautiful. You’re quite the artist, Harper. I bet you’ll be famous one day.”
Harper beamed, practically floating with pride as she took her artwork back. “I’m gonna draw more princesses now!”
Brandon set her down, his eyes soft. He gave her hair an affectionate ruffle and watched her settle back onto the carpet with her crayons.
Yvette quickly reached for the folder on the table and handed it to him. “Brandon, your assistant dropped this off earlier–said to give it to you.”
“Thanks,” he replied, accepting it. He glanced briefly at the contents before setting it aside on the cushion.
When he looked back up, he found Yvette watching him closely, her expression layered and unreadable.
A faint, puzzled smile touched his lips. “Do I have something on my face?”
“No, it’s not that,” she began, hesitating briefly before pressing on. “Your assistant mentioned you’ve seemed a little off lately. I wasn’t sure if it was work–related or… something personal. I just wish I could help somehow, but I don’t really know how.”
Brandon’s smile remained calm. “Work or personal–I make it a point not to bring outside stress home. You don’t need to worry about my mood. I’ll handle it.”
Yvette relaxed slightly. She nodded, offering a small smile. “Okay.”
Brandon gestured toward the papers spread in front of her. “What’s all this?”

Yvette glanced down at her sketches and sighed. “Just working on some designs. There’s an industry awards ceremony next month–I’ve been named Outstanding New Designer, so I need to walk the red carpet. I’m trying to design the gown I’ll wear that night.”
“Congratulations,” Brandon said, his tone sincere.
“Thank you,” she replied, though her smile was tinged with frustration. “But this dress is giving me a major headache. I’ve gone through so many revisions and still can’t get it right. Something feels off, but I’m stuck.”
Brandon leaned forward slightly. “I’m no design expert, and my taste is pretty basic. But if you want an honest opinion, I’m happy to give one.”
“Please!” Yvette immediately passed him her latest sketch. “Tell me what you think of this draft.”
Brandon took the drawing and studied the elegant gown on the page. To him, it simply looked like a beautiful dress–he couldn’t pinpoint technical strengths or flaws.
After a moment, he handed it back. “It’s lovely. And it would suit you.”
Yvette’s eyes held a hopeful gleam. “Really? Nothing you’d change?”
Brandon cleared his throat lightly. “Well, if I had to nitpick… the shoulders seem a bit exposed, and the neckline dips lower than what I’d prefer.”
Yvette blinked, slightly taken aback.
He added gently, “I just mean–it’s winter, and even with indoor heating, you wouldn’t want to catch a chill.”
A faint blush touched Yvette’s cheeks. “Noted. I’ll keep that in mind while revising.”
Brandon settled back against the cushions. “Honestly, though, you should design what makes you happy. You don’t have to please everyone.”
Yvette nodded, her gaze drifting to his outfit. A thought seemed to strike her.
“Brandon, I couldn’t help noticing–you only have about four suits in your closet, and none of them fit you quite right.”
A faint, almost embarrassed smile appeared on his face. “My assistant picked them out. Back when I worked at the hospital, I never had much reason to wear suits.”
Yvette set her pen down and rested her hands on the coffee table, sitting up a little straighter.
