Zoe pressed her lips into a soft smile. She stayed quiet for a few seconds and then spoke. “I pretty much knew what you wanted to talk about when you called. The main reason I agreed to meet you is to tell you in person–I’m never getting together with Brandon.”

Yvette looked confused. “Why not?”

In her eyes, Brandon was perfect.

Zoe pushed her water glass aside and rested both hands on the table. “Have you ever studied biology?”

“No. I studied design.”

Zoe smiled gently. “Only the male peacocks fan their tails.”

Yvette furrowed her brows. “What does that have to do with Brandon liking you?”

Zoe paused for a moment to organize her thoughts before speaking calmly. “What I mean is, Brandon has never put on a show for me. Biologically speaking, humans are still animals. Males are born with a certain level of aggression, especially toward females they’re attracted

to.”

Yvette stared at her, totally lost.

“Still don’t get it?”

“I don’t.”

“I’ll put it simply.” Zoe analyzed the matter in a steady tone. “Sexual attraction doesn’t always equal love, but true love always comes with sexual attraction. This instinct drives male animals to make all kinds of bold moves. That can be peacocks fanning their tails, birds dancing, or other animals going even further–grabbing their mate’s neck and mounting them.”

Yvette understood. “But Brandon is a proper, honorable man.”

“I have plenty of honorable men chasing me too.” Zoe shook her head slightly. “They won’t force themselves on me because of the law, but they never stop sending me signals. Nonstop calls and WhatsApp messages, bouquets and gifts, movie date invitations, fake coincidences to bump into me. They show off their muscles, money, and looks right in front of me. Yvette stood up for Brandon. “Brandon has asked you out and bought you gifts too. You’re just the one who turned him down.”

Zoe nodded. “He’s classy, just like you. Even you prepared a gift for me on our first meeting. Of course he’d get me something for my birthday.”

“He’s liked you for years. Why do you have to use biology to dissect his feelings for you?”

Yvette felt a sharp twinge of frustration. She clenched her fists, feeling sorry for Brandon.

Zoe propped her chin on her hand and thought carefully. “I’ve known Brandon for over a decade. He was a senior in college when I was a freshman. That’s probably when he first developed a crush on me. Maybe my looks or my vibe caught his eye. But he never made a move back then. Honestly, if he’d chased me in college, I probably would’ve gotten with him.”

Zoe looked back at Yvette. “He didn’t even have that raw, impulsive attraction to me when he was young. How pure and shallow is that kind of fondness?”

Yvette took a sip of water, her heart growing heavier by the second.

“We crossed paths again later. He asked me out once, and I said no. He never tried again after that.

“As he got older, his dad pressured him harder to settle down. He confessed to me a few times and tried to ask me out again. It was only because he still has feelings for me and he thinks I’d make a good wife. It never was genuine longing—he just hadn’t met anyone else he liked.

“His feelings for me are nothing more than shallow admiration. He’s never taken any bold steps to pursue me passionately. He just waited for me to say yes. We’ve never been together, we barely know each other, and we share no deep emotional bond.”

Yvette sighed helplessly. “Ms. Ellison, Brandon is-”

Zoe cut her off mid–sentence. “Do you know the story between Julian and Iris? Even when Julian falsely suspected Iris of cheating, he still refused to divorce her. He’s possessive. He even broke the law to keep her by his side and locked her away for months. Julian is also an educated, classy, law–abiding gentleman.
