After everything Zoe had said, Yvette thought she was just too insecure and pessimistic.
She refused to believe Brandon’s feelings for Zoe were that shallow.
The server walked over with their food.
A heavy silence fell between the two girls.
“Enjoy your meal.” The server left right after speaking.
Zoe picked up her knife and fork. She glanced at her steak, then looked at Yvette. “Still got an appetite?”
Yvette snapped out of her daze, grabbed her utensils, and nodded before she started eating.
Zoe ate slowly as she said thoughtfully, “If Iris wasn’t Brandon’s sister, I probably would’ve said yes to him. He’s good–looking and comes from a wealthy family. I wouldn’t care if we lasted forever or not. I’d just take the money and have fun. I lose nothing, right?”
Yvette let out a helpless chuckle. “Ms. Ellison, you’re so blunt and genuine.”
Zoe smiled. “To put it harshly, if I slept with another man tonight, Brandon’s crush on me would vanish by tomorrow morning.”
Yvette panicked and swallowed her food in a hurry. “Don’t say things like that.”
Zoe couldn’t help but laugh at her flustered expression.
Yvette set down her cutlery, her face full of worry. “What if Brandon never meets another person he likes for the rest of his life? What will he do then?”
Zoe kept eating and answered casually, “Then he stays single. There’s no shame in being alone. No one said humans have to get married. Plenty of people divorce anyway.”
“Mr. Whitmore will never let him stay single.”
Zoe nodded. “Exactly. That’s the difference between him and me. He’s chained down by duties and family expectations. He needs someone from the same social class. It’d be perfect if they fall in love too. I truly wish Brandon happiness.”

“Stop worrying about him.” Zoe spoke calmly. “He claims he’s liked me for years, yet I was never part of his life. He still lived happily and freely. He’s nothing like Julian. When Julian lost Iris, he destroyed himself and everyone around him. He drank so much he got stomach bleeding and was hospitalized multiple times. He was a total mess, always paranoid and insecure.”
Yvette’s eyes widened with obvious curiosity as she stared at Zoe. “I never knew Julian was that lovesick.”
“You haven’t heard the best part.” Zoe leaned forward with a playful grin and lowered her voice. “Julian is such a hypocrite. He’s obsessed with cleanliness…. but only for other people.”
Yvette held back her smile and leaned closer to Zoe.
She listened intently as Zoe told her all the ridiculous yet romantic things Julian had done for Iris.
Both girls got wrapped up in their sweet story, growing more and more excited the more they talked.
Brandon’s name was never mentioned again for the rest of the meal. Their conversation shifted entirely to Julian and Iris.
Yvette shared how loving the couple were now, while Zoe told her about their rough past.

Christmas was drawing near.
Daniel had been contacting Zoe a lot lately, always checking in on her regarding her father’s
mess.
Zoe kept telling him everything was fine.
But she underestimated how rotten her father truly was.
Right after he got discharged from the hospital, he broke into their house and smashed everything to pieces. Sally trembled in fear, crying alone in the corner.
When Zoe received her mother’s frantic call, she rushed home. The second she saw the wreckage, her anger flared up instantly.
Christmas was just a few days away. How were they supposed to celebrate in this mess?

The stove was torn apart, the cabinets shattered, and not a single window was left intact. The house looked like an empty raw construction site.
“You ungrateful brat!” Simon roared furiously. “How dare you team up with your boyfriend and let gangsters beat your own father? I’ll make sure you never have a peaceful day!”
Zoe was fuming. She was about to make a call when Simon ran off, hiding somewhere unknown.
Zoe barely had time to comfort her mom. She tidied up a small space to get through the night.
The next afternoon, Simon showed up again.
This time, he smashed the front door open, stormed inside, and splashed red paint all over the walls. He pointed at Zoe and screamed, “I’ve been around a lot longer than you. You’re still too young to mess with me!”
Sally’s nonstop sobs were grating on her nerves.
Her home was ruined beyond repair. On the verge of breaking down, Zoe felt exhausted and miserable. Looking at her father’s repulsive face, she almost wanted to drag him down with her.
But a scumbag would always be a scumbag.
As long as he stayed alive, he would keep clinging to her like a parasite.
