Brandon let out a bitter smile. His mood dropped, and he said nothing.
“Don’t hold onto any hope for her anymore,” Iris advised him gently.

A heavy weight pressed on Brandon’s chest. He pulled over to the side of the road. He covered his face with both hands and leaned back against the seat.
“Brandon, what’s wrong?” Iris looked at him with worry.
Brandon took a long moment to calm down. He lowered his hands and exhaled slowly with his eyes closed. “Nothing. I just need a minute. It’s dangerous to drive when I’m not focused.”
Iris stared straight ahead and spoke calmly. “You two never even dated. Your feelings aren’t that deep. You’ll get over her fast if you just let go.”
Brandon breathed out heavily, his voice low and rough. “I just want her to be happy.”
Iris nodded.
After a short silence, Brandon asked again, “What kind of person is Daniel? How’s his family background? Is he good enough for Zoe?”
Iris smiled softly to comfort him. “Stop worrying about her. Everyone has their own path. Some things are out of your control.”
“Just tell me,” Brandon insisted. He still could not accept losing to Daniel.
Iris gave a faint smile. “Daniel is a good man. He’s close friends with Julian. Julian says he’s responsible and capable.
“Actually, his family background is similar to Zoe’s. His grandfather was a gambler. He destroyed the whole family and dragged down his children. Daniel’s family fell apart. His parents got divorced, and his father left to work in another city. He later died in a construction accident.
“Daniel relied on his own talent and hard work. He got into Stanford. Now he owns his own company. He built everything from nothing.”
“What about his grandfather?” Brandon asked. He feared Zoe would get tangled up with two gamblers.
“Julian told me Daniel sent his grandfather to a nursing home in another state.”

Iris thought for a second. “I think he did it to cut the emotional ties. He keeps himself busy so he never has to visit.”
Brandon restarted the car and kept driving.
After leaving the orthopedic hospital, they headed straight for a local nursing home.
Zoe pushed Simon’s wheelchair while Daniel carried his luggage. They put the bags down in the nursing home lobby.
Simon clenched his fists and banged them against the wheelchair. He glared at Zoe with a vicious look, his teeth gritted like he wanted to kill her.
“I’m not staying here! I’m only 58! If they dare keep me here, I’ll destroy this place!”
Zoe stared at him blankly with no emotion in her eyes. She just wanted to get rid of him for good.
Daniel walked in front of Simon. He placed both hands on the wheelchair handles and leaned down to whisper in a low tone, “Behave yourself, and you’ll live out your days peacefully here. If you cause trouble, we’ll send you to a psychiatric hospital instead. It’s way worse than this place.
“The doctors will inject you with sedatives every time you lose your temper. You won’t even have the strength to fight.”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Simon snarled, his eyes burning with rage.
“Your legs are broken. You can barely walk. Your son is in prison. Your daughter is your legal guardian now. Tell me, do you think she wouldn’t dare?”
Simon slowly turned to look at Zoe. His tough attitude faded instantly. His eyes turned red, and he begged in a shaky voice, “Zoe, are you really going to do this to me? I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll never gamble again. I won’t make you pay my debts. Don’t leave me here. Once my legs heal, I’ll move back to the countryside and never bother you again. I swear…”
He held up three fingers to make an oath, his eyes filled with fake regret.
Zoe didn’t believe a single word he said.
“When you gambled away all our money, when you hit Mom, when you hurt Arthur and me…
