Brandon could not understand Zoe’s choices, but Iris could.

Iris had struggled and survived in the lowest corners of society for more than 20 years.
People born with rotten flaws in their character were never worth saving. She knew that from experience, just like Emily, her brother’s former wife.
Brandon was nothing like her.
He grew up in a wealthy, prestigious family. He received the best education since he was a child. He had good manners and a pure moral compass. The worst cruelty he had ever seen came from Lily and Arthur.
And that kind of cruelty was shallow, plain and simple.
He never truly understood people with corrupt, rotten instincts. Sometimes those people were worse and more disgusting than outright villains.
Iris walked up to Brandon and grabbed his hand. “Brandon, let’s leave. This is not a good time to visit. We should go home.”
Brandon looked utterly disappointed. “Zoe, send your father to a gambling rehab center. Give your mom a safe, peaceful place to live. Don’t turn into the person you once hated. Stay away from these gangsters. There are hundreds of ways to fix a problem. You don’t have to pick the
worst one.”
Zoe stared at him. Her eyes suddenly watered.
Are there really hundreds of solutions?
Of course there are–for someone like Brandon.
He could pay off the debt, send Simon to rehab, give Sally a comfortable life, and hire personal trainers to monitor Simon twenty–four hours a day.
In his world, money fixed every trouble.
Zoe let out a cold scoff and lowered her head to take a slow breath.
“Why do you keep turning down my help?” Brandon glanced sharply at Daniel, frustration clear in his tone. “Why him? Why choose violence?”

“Because he and I are the same.” Zoe lifted her head and stared straight at him, her voice sharp and breathless. “You and I are not.”
Brandon held back his anger. He tilted his head and looked away. His chest ached heavily.
He could not accept it. He could not understand it.
What does Daniel have that I don’t?
Iris tightened her grip on his hand and pulled him toward the door. “Let her handle her family matters. Let’s go home.”
Brandon hesitated, then followed Iris out of the house.
Iris glanced back over her shoulder as they walked. “Zoe, I’m spending Christmas with Julian and Grandma in the countryside this year. I’ll come visit you after the holidays. Take care of yourself, okay?”
Zoe forced a weak smile and nodded, her eyes glistening with tears.
Iris pulled Brandon to the elevator and pressed the button.
Suddenly, another raw, painful scream echoed from inside the house.
The agonizing sound traveled through the door cracks and seemed to shake the whole building.
Brandon clenched his fists. He stared blankly at the closed elevator door, suppressing the restlessness in his chest.
Even if the victim had been a stranger, he could never stand by and watch such brutality.
The elevator doors slid open. Brandon made no move to step inside. Iris grabbed his arm tightly. “Brandon, we can’t interfere. Please.”
“This is wrong.” Brandon looked at her, his view of the world shaken. “Legally, she is breaking the law.”
Iris sighed and let the elevator doors shut again. She spoke in a calm, earnest tone. “I once thought the same way you do. There are plenty of ways to fix things, and we shouldn’t pick the worst one. Back then, even when Emily abused Frank, I never pushed Ethan to divorce her. I always thought it was wrong to break a family apart.”
“Do you know what happened in the end?” Iris’s eyes turned red at the old memories. “Emily stole all the money and left us with massive debts. After she lost every cent in scams, she came
