“You know I don’t do relationships and I don’t want to get married.” Zoe sounded drained. “Why keep wasting your money on me? We agreed–one night, and we’re even. You keep putting it off. You use this excuse to ask me out, then you never touch me. How much longer are you gonna toy with me?”
“Toy with you?” Daniel breathed out softly. His voice turned deep and hoarse. His eyes reddened instantly. A bitter smile tugged at his lips before he let out a cold huff and glanced away, avoiding her gaze.
He didn’t want her to see how vulnerable he was.
Zoe hung her head. A sharp twinge of pain pricked her chest.
She had never ached over a man before, and she had no idea why it was happening now.
Realizing she had spoken too harshly, she softened her tone. “I’m sorry. I’ve had a terrible day, and I took it out on you. I’ll pay you back in installments. Let’s just stop seeing each other.”
She stepped past him and kept walking.
Daniel spun around, grabbed her arm, and pulled her back sharply.
Zoe stumbled and crashed straight into his chest. She placed both hands on his torso and stared up at him anxiously.
When she met his watery, deep eyes, her heart squeezed painfully.
She was actually feeling sorry for him.
Daniel wet his dry lips. “I don’t want your money. I want that night. Now.”
He took her hand, dragged her to the passenger seat, and gently pushed her inside the car.
Zoe felt lost and uneasy. Right after she sat down, Daniel tossed the golden rose onto her lap and shut the car door.
She buckled her seatbelt and picked up the gold flower. Her mood felt heavy and gloomy for no clear reason.
Daniel sped down the highway under the sunset glow.

Darkness slowly fell.
He drove all the way up to a quiet, isolated mountainside.

Zoe thought he would take her to his place or a hotel. She never expected this dark, hidden spot on the hill.
There was nothing pretty to see here.
She knew he had not brought her here for the view.
“Why here?” She grew nervous.
Daniel unbuckled his seatbelt. He leaned over, undid hers, and pulled her onto his lap with one arm wrapped firmly around her waist.
The car was cramped. Even after he leaned his seat back, it still felt tight.
They stared into each other’s eyes. Both of their gazes burned hot. Their chests rose and fell fast.
The air inside the car turned thick and warm.
Daniel swallowed hard and reached for her jacket.
“Can we go somewhere else?”
He tossed her jacket aside and kept going.
Zoe trembled nervously. “Please, somewhere else.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“This place is thrilling. You’ll never forget it.”
It was thrilling indeed.
Out in the open, inside a car, constantly fearing someone might find them.
For Zoe, he was not gentle. He was almost rough.
They stayed on the mountain for two whole hours.

She could barely walk when she got out of the car. She grabbed her bag and walked away without glancing back.
Yet every step she took stabbed at her heart.
She was the one who insisted on settling their debt with one night together and cutting all ties.
So why did she feel hurt, miserable, and on the verge of crying?
Zoe walked into the apartment building and stepped inside the elevator.
The second the elevator doors closed, she buried her face in her hands and broke down crying.
Daniel once said free things cost the most. But she had always treated her first time as nothing more than payment for her debt.
Over these past days, she had gotten used to his care, his affection, and his warmth.
She forgot she was a woman who did not deserve love–burdened with debt, from a broken family, and doomed to drag down anyone who stayed with her.
She slid down the cold elevator wall and crouched in the corner, sobbing bitterly.
She forgot to press her floor button.
Suddenly, the elevator doors opened. Someone pulled her up.
Before she could see who it was, a pair of strong arms wrapped tightly around her.
