Mid–March rolled around. She had been out of work for months. With no job and no income, her anxiety kept getting worse.

She sent out resumes to every company she could find and interviewed at several corporations that day.

Most pharmaceutical companies turned her down the second they saw she was unmarried at her age. They worried she would get married and have kids soon, so they chose married women or male applicants instead.

Her last stop for the day was a tech company hiring a pharmacology consultant.

She had never applied for the position, but the company’s job offer had popped up in her email out of nowhere.

Zoe gave a slight nod. “Hello.” She sat down quietly.

The interviewers briefly introduced the company. They explained that the machine beside them was their newly developed AI medical robot, designed for hospitals and pharmacies to serve the public.

Yvonne set down her pen, crossed her arms, and leaned back in her chair. She looked Zoe up and down judgmentally.

Zoe had sleek hair, a sweet face and a curvy figure. It only irritated Yvonne.

Her tone turned sharp and firm. “I thought the previous male applicant was better.”

An uneasy feeling crept over Zoe. She knew she was probably getting rejected again.

At that moment, one male interviewer tossed his pen down in frustration. “Another man? This company is already flooded with male employees. The few women we have are all married.”

Yvonne smiled calmly. “Aren’t I a single woman?”

“Everyone in this company knows you’re obsessed with the boss!” another man retorted.

“You keep blocking every single female candidate just to keep them away from him!”

“We’re hiring Ms. Ellison.”

“I agree.”

“Me too.”

“Same here.”

The three young men glared at Yvonne, clearly annoyed.
