Zoe could tell she’d upset him. She knew the request sounded harsh, but she worked directly under him. She didn’t want special workplace privileges, nor did she want to stir up drama among coworkers.

“If you think that’s too much to ask…” Zoe fidgeted, sounding visibly tense.

“It’s not.” Daniel forced a faint smile and breathed out softly. “I’m disappointed, sure, but nothing you ask for is ever too much. I get where you’re coming from. Don’t worry about hurting my feelings, and don’t change your mind just to spare mine. This is a two–way relationship, and I respect your call.”

Zoe hung her head quietly. “Thank you.”

Daniel leaned against the table. He reached up, tilted her chin upward, and locked eyes with her. “You’re so bright, confident and easygoing in everyday life. Why do you shut down and act so timid when it comes to love?”

His words cut straight through her.

She simply didn’t understand love, and she was too scared to take a chance on it.

“Zoe, I’m the one chasing you.” Daniel spoke steadily and sincerely. “Hold your head up high. I’m the one admiring you from below.”

Another sharp wave of emotion washed over Zoe.

This ache was sweet, warm, and utterly blissful.

She had never thought highly of herself, yet he cherished her like she was priceless.

Zoe stifled her tears at once and nodded, her lips pressed together tightly.

Daniel smiled softly. “Finish eating. I’ll drive you back to the office afterward.”

Zoe picked up her fork again, stealing little glances at him mid–bite.

Daniel never took his eyes off her, a faint smile playing on his lips. When he caught her sneaking looks, his eyes softened, overflowing with gentle affection.

Zoe quickly dropped her gaze, focusing on her food to hide her fluster.

After lunch, she rode calmly in Daniel’s car, her mood light as they headed for the office.

When they pulled into the underground parking lot, they spotted Yvonne stepping out of a car with a young man.

The pair had already noticed Daniel and Zoe’s parked car.

Daniel unbuckled his seatbelt. “Want me to make the introduction? That’s Yvonne’s brother, Andrew Dewitt–my business partner.”

Doubt crept into Zoe’s mind.

She wanted nothing to do with Yvonne. The woman was clearly spoiled, arrogant, and used to getting her own way. Tangling with someone like her would only bring unnecessary trouble.

Still, Andrew Dewitt was the company’s second–largest shareholder. She couldn’t ignore him.

Sensing her hesitation, Daniel grabbed the car door. “Don’t worry about Yvonne. She can’t do a thing to you.”

His reassurance settled her nerves.

She climbed out of the car too.

Andrew walked over with a friendly grin. “I never thought I’d see you roll in this late. You practically live in the office.”
