“I hate how you keep drawing lines between us. We’re together, so our money should be too. Any debt you have is my debt.”
Zoe’s heart swelled with warmth. He treated her so perfectly that she couldn’t find a single flaw in him.
His phone rang out of nowhere. Daniel gently patted the top of her head, his tone soft and affectionate.
“Get dressed. Let’s go eat our late–night food.”
With that, he walked out of the bedroom to grab their takeout order.
Zoe flopped back onto the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling, falling deeper for him with every passing second.
She wanted to marry Daniel.
Once upon a time, she’d shut herself off from love and marriage entirely–but he’d slowly melted her cold, guarded heart.
The summer sun blazed relentlessly outside, scorching hot.
Inside an extravagant mansion, the air conditioning kept the spacious living room nice and cool. Yvette was hunched over the coffee table, working on her art sketches.
Her phone suddenly buzzed.
She set down her paintbrush and unlocked her phone. A message popped up in their three–girl group chat.
It was from Zoe, “Guys, my boyfriend just proposed. I’m so confused and scared. What should I do?”
Yvette felt a twinge of envy, yet she had no clue how to comfort Zoe.
Iris replied right away, “Daniel’s one of the good ones. Don’t let him slip away, Zoe.”
Zoe texted back, “I know, but I’m nervous. I can’t calm myself down.”

“You weren’t even afraid of staying single forever. What have you got to lose? If it doesn’t work out, just get divorced.”
“That makes sense. And he makes me feel so safe.”
Yvette finally typed out her reply, “Zoe, if it feels right, marry him. Life’s too short. Just enjoy it while it lasts.”
Zoe sent a nodding emoji.
Iris texted, “Yvette’s totally right.”
Heavy footsteps echoed through the hall, followed by a sharp, snarky tone.
“When are you gonna quit this bad habit of drawing on the coffee table?”
Yvette looked up to see her condescending half–sister, Judith Jensen.
Judith held an iced coffee in one hand. Even at home, she dressed flawlessly. Her bold makeup and trendy outfit made her look flashy and polished.
The two sisters had never gotten along, so Yvette didn’t bother greeting her.
Judith sauntered over to the sofa and set her coffee down on the table.
Yvette tensed and hurried to gather her sketches, but she was too slow.
The cup tipped over, spilling coffee all over her artwork.
Yvette stared at the ruined sketch, completely speechless.
This had happened way too many times. She was worn out and numb to Judith’s petty tricks.
Judith covered her mouth and giggled, her bright red manicure glinting mockingly under the indoor lights.
“Oops, my bad. I accidentally messed up your drawing.”
Yvette said nothing, just stared straight at her.
“We have a perfectly nice study room, but you insist on drawing out here.” Judith faked an innocent tone. “Don’t go blaming me.”
Yvette cleaned up the stained sketch and wiped off the table with a tissue, her voice turning
cold.

“You keep pulling this stuff. Is it even fun anymore?”
Judith leaned back against the sofa, leisurely admiring her manicured nails.

“Oh, it’s hilarious. Remember two years ago? Dad sent you to stay with the Whitmores to get close to Brandon. Those two months were the best time of my life.”
Yvette’s hands froze mid–movement.
A sharp, bitter pain twisted in her chest, and she tightened her grip on her sketches.
Judith sneered and taunted her cruelly.
“Funny how Brandon never even spared you a glance. You slunk back home during Christmas. Now half a year’s gone, and his family’s already locked in a business marriage for him. You don’t stand a single chance.”
Yvette took a slow breath and kept packing her art supplies.
She gathered her sketches and stationery, ready to leave.
Judith stood to her feet.
“Don’t you wanna know who he’s marrying?”
Yvette froze in place.
