“Speaking of acting…” Judith suddenly turned toward Brandon, her eyes glinting brightly.
“Our film crew is looking for a medical consultant. Are you interested, Brandon? There would be plenty of… private time to interact.”
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, revealing a tiny diamond ear stud.
The table fell silent.
Yvette’s stomach churned. The ribs on her plate suddenly felt greasy and repulsive.
“I’m sorry. I already resigned from the hospital, and my company keeps me pretty busy.”
Brandon’s voice sounded cold. At the same time, he gently scooped a spoonful of broth for
Yvette.
“Besides, I just got married. I should spend more time at home with my wife.”
Ralph burst into loud laughter. “Well said! Come, another drink!”
Yvette’s heart fluttered sharply.
She lifted her gaze, staring at him in shock.
He looked calm and composed. Were those casual words meant to keep Judith at a distance, or did he truly mean them?
Yvette couldn’t read his heart.
Sitting diagonally across the table, Judith wore a stiff smile. A dark glint flashed across her eyes, and she quietly ground her back teeth in anger.
By the end of the dinner, the sky outside was dotted with countless stars.
Ralph was thoroughly drunk. He slammed his hand on the table.
“Everyone stays the night! The guest rooms are all ready!”
Yvette snapped her head up. “Dad, we—”
“I had the maid redo your old room,” Madeline cut her off with a warm smile.

“Brandon’s been drinking. He can’t drive. Safety comes first.”

The tips of Brandon’s ears turned faint red. He didn’t drink much, but his alcohol tolerance was extremely low.
He had unbuttoned two buttons on his white shirt, exposing a shadowed strip of his collarbone.
Yvette accidentally caught sight of it and quickly looked away.
Yet she noticed Judith staring fixedly at that spot.
Once the family dinner ended, everyone headed back to their rooms.
Judith walked ahead while Brandon and Yvette followed side by side on the staircase.
All of a sudden, Judith “accidentally” missed a step and lurched straight toward Brandon.
Brandon twisted his body to dodge her instantly.
He wrapped one arm around Yvette’s shoulder and leaned back against the wall, neatly avoiding Judith entirely.
Judith stumbled clumsily down two steps. She barely caught herself on the railing, and her dress ripped along the hem.
The sudden intimate embrace took Yvette by surprise.
Her heart raced wildly from the warmth of his firm chest and the large hand resting on her shoulder.
She stared up slowly at his sharp jawline.
He was so handsome, with perfect facial lines.
He had always been honorable, kind, and warm.
Why hadn’t he reached out to catch Judith?
Instead, he’d pulled her away to avoid Judith.
Anyone else would have instinctively tried to help.
Judith’s nails dug hard into the wooden railing. Her body trembled with suppressed rage.

She had starred in countless romance dramas, yet she never imagined a man could be so cold.
It would have been such an easy thing to do–just one simple catch–but he’d chosen to ignore
her.
“I slipped.” Judith forced a stiff smile, barely holding back her fury as she looked at Brandon.
“Why didn’t you catch me? I could’ve tumbled all the way down the stairs.”
“My apologies. It was an instinctive reaction.”
Judith’s smile turned even more rigid. “If it was just instinct, then why did you pull Yvette away?”
Brandon seemed to realize their close proximity at that moment.
He glanced down at Yvette in his arms, his fingers tensing slightly.
He slowly pulled his arm away and spoke softly. “Yvette, are you alright?”
Yvette shook her head with a gentle smile, feeling a sense of relief and joy.
Ever since childhood, Judith had never stopped plotting against her.
Their family had always been oblivious, favoring Judith over her.
Brandon was the first person who made her feel prioritized over Judith, the first person who stood firmly on her side.
Judith was seething with anger.
She bit her lower lip and stormed angrily up the stairs.
They entered Yvette’s bedroom.
The room was filled with soft, youthful tones with warm wooden furnishings.
A maid brought Brandon a brand–new set of men’s pajamas.
Brandon glanced around quietly, observing every detail of her room.
Feeling awkward and flustered, Yvette walked into the walk–in closet to grab her own pajamas.
