The room stayed dark, yet the shadow of his sharp features grew clearer.

His hot, warm breath mixed with his faint clean scent brushed straight across her cheek.
Yvette swallowed nervously and slowly closed her eyes.
Suddenly, a sharp, urgent knock echoed through the door.
Both of them flinched in shock.
Brandon pulled his hand away, pushed himself up, and glanced toward the door.
Yvette’s eyes flew open.
“What’s going on?”
“I have no idea.” Brandon stood up right away, flipped on the light, and walked over to open the door.
The second the door swung open, Judith stood there in a thin pink silk nightgown. She clutched her stomach and collapsed weakly into Brandon’s chest.
She crashed into him unexpectedly, sliding down against his torso.
He had no time to dodge and instinctively grabbed her arm to stop her from slipping further down his body.
“What’s wrong with you?” Brandon asked, his tone impatient.
Yvette threw off the blanket, climbed out of bed, and hurried to Brandon’s side to stare at Judith.
Judith had already passed out in his arms.
Brandon’s expression turned cold, and he let out an annoyed huff.
He rarely ever looked displeased.
He only showed this obvious frustration because he could no longer tolerate her tricks.
Yvette knew exactly what Judith was doing.
“It’s her usual trick,” she said quickly. “We won’t get any sleep tonight. I’ll go get someone.”

Brandon frowned in confusion. “Does she do this often?”
“All the time.” Yvette was completely used to it.
She knew Judith was faking it, but she still had to inform her family.

If she hesitated and Judith pretended her condition worsened from delayed treatment, Yvette would get the blame again.
Judith pulled this cheap trick over and over without fail.
Doctors and her family always assumed her collapses were caused by emotional distress, so everyone believed she was genuinely sick.
Judith’s sudden blackout threw the entire Jensen family into a panic.
Everyone rushed her to the hospital for a full medical examination.
Bertha and Chris were terrified. Yvette’s parents were worried and insisted on staying at the hospital with Brandon and Yvette.
Judith woke up late at night in terrible condition, throwing up nonstop until there was nothing but bitter bile left in her stomach.
The doctor walked over with the blood test results in hand.
“She’s been poisoned.”
Everyone froze in complete shock at his words.
“Poisoned?” Madeline’s voice trembled. She tightly grabbed the doctor’s white coat with her well–maintained hands. “How could she get poisoned?”
The doctor adjusted his glasses and handed the lab report to Brandon.
“Blood tests show mild food poisoning. She likely consumed something contaminated during dinner.”
Chaos instantly broke out inside the hospital ward.
Chris wore a dark, grim expression. Bertha wiped her tears anxiously. Ralph paced back and forth nervously.
Madeline walked straight up to Yvette.

“Yvette, you supervised all the food preparation tonight. How could this happen?”

Yvette’s face turned deathly pale. She twisted the edge of her dress anxiously with her fingers.
“Mom, all the ingredients were fresh. I watched the maid cook every dish. We all ate the same food, and none of us got sick.”
Brandon’s eyes darkened after hearing her explanation.
He finally understood why Yvette had been missing all afternoon.
He thought she’d gone somewhere to unwind, for she hadn’t been back to her old home in
ages.
He never imagined she’d spent the whole time cooking in the kitchen with the staff.
Even though cooking was her talent and she made delicious food, no one should force her to work in the kitchen.
On the hospital bed, Judith slowly opened her eyes, her lips pale.
“It’s my fault,” she mumbled weakly. “I ate too many almond shortbread cookies.”
Yvette had baked those almond shortbread cookies herself the night before.
Every member of the Jensen family instantly turned their suspicious gaze toward Yvette.
“Yvette,” Bertha asked seriously, “when did you make these cookies?”
“Yesterday afternoon.” Yvette gently bit her lower lip, overwhelming sorrow bubbling up in her
chest.
Once again, her family doubted her simply because of one sentence from Judith.
Brandon sharply sensed the tense shift in the room, and his expression turned even colder.
Judith suddenly broke into a harsh coughing fit, her voice frail and shaky.
“Don’t blame Yvette… I just had a craving and ate too many…”
Her words sounded like she was defending Yvette, but they actually confirmed everyone’s suspicion that the pastries were toxic.
Madeline’s eyes welled up with tears.
