She had known he was supposed to marry Judith. Even so, she’d thrown aside her pride and begged him to marry her instead.
He was good to her. He treated her with nothing but respect and care, never letting her suffer or feel wronged in any way.
But was that really love?
Loving him had slowly worn her down.
Every time she thought about the other woman living in his heart, a sharp sting pierced her chest.
She’d once thought she could endure it, but she finally realized she couldn’t.
Loving him too deeply hurt far too much.
Brandon saw the tears welling up in her eyes and panicked. His gaze softened. He gently wiped the tears off her cheeks with his fingertips, his voice barely audible.
“I’m sorry. Did I scare you?”
Those words broke her completely. Crystal tears streamed down her cheeks one after another.
She looked utterly vulnerable with tears rolling down her face.
Brandon’s chest rose and fell. He pulled her tightly into his arms, cradling her gently while stroking the back of her head.
“Don’t cry, Yvette. I’m not forcing you to have kids. I was just worried about your health. Birth control pills are terrible for your body.”
Yvette stayed stiff and motionless, burying her face in his warm chest.
His warmth felt so real, yet she never felt safe in his arms.
She could never tell what was truly in his heart.
He was naturally kind to everyone. As his legal wife, she was merely someone he was obligated to take care of.
His kindness might not even be fondness, let alone love.

After calming down, she washed her face. Brandon drove her back to her workplace.
He didn’t send her a single message the entire day.

Maybe he was put off by her refusal to have children. Or perhaps he simply didn’t bother buying condoms anymore.
They used to sleep together every other day. Now, they barely touched each other at all.
Already insecure by nature, Yvette felt abandoned, like he was freezing her out because she didn’t want to give him an heir.
Luckily, her best friend Riley had come back.
At least she had someone to talk to and ease her inner pain.
That evening, Riley showed up at her office.
She dressed in sleek black streetwear, with neat letter tattoos winding around her forearm and tiny studs glinting in her ears. She chewed gum casually, her short hair exposing her ears. She looked handsome.
Stepping into the office, she leaned against Yvette’s desk and tilted her chin up with one finger.
“Hey beauty, off work. Come eat and watch a movie with me.”
Yvette set down her pen helplessly. “You’ve been dragging me out every single day since you got back. Where’s your girlfriend?”
Riley chewed her gum harder and let out a cold scoff. “We broke up.”
“Broke up?” Yvette looked shocked. ‘Didn’t you come back just for her? What happened?”
Riley pressed her lips together bitterly, pretending to stay calm.
“Her mom found out she’s dating a girl. She threw a huge fit and forced her into an arranged marriage. The guy’s a rich heir. He’s got what it takes to carry on the family line.
Yvette looked at her with sympathy.
She could see through Riley’s indifferent facade. Deep down, she was hurting badly.
And Yvette knew exactly how that pain felt.
“Alright, let’s go.” Yvette grabbed her phone and bag, then stood up.

“You gonna text your husband?” Riley asked.
“Yeah.”
“Such a good wife.”
Yvette smiled faintly. “It’s just basic mutual respect.”
Riley slung an arm over her shoulder and walked out with her.
“Are you happy being married?”
“I am.” Yvette forced a smile.
“You don’t sound like it.”

“He treats me really well,” Yvette insisted, not wanting her best friend to dislike Brandon.
She chose to hide all her troubles deep inside.
