That single name, Riley, twisted his heart into a tight knot.

Three days later, he got off work early and waited for her outside the company building.
What he saw was Riley slinging an arm over Yvette’s shoulder, the two of them walking away while chatting and laughing.
He had never seen Yvette smile so brightly and sweetly.
It all suddenly made sense to him. This was why she refused to have his child.
Yvette didn’t get home until past eleven that night.
Brandon was sitting quietly in the living room, waiting for her.
“Why has your friend been dragging you out every night lately?” His tone was flat, completely emotionless.
“Her lover broke up with her. She’s upset, so she hangs out with me to distract herself.”
Brandon frowned. “Your friend got dumped, so now you…”
He trailed off.
He had wanted to sneer and ask, “Does that mean you think you have a chance now?”
But the words were far too harsh, so he held them back.
He had always known her heart belonged to someone else. This marriage was merely a safe haven for her to escape Judith’s bullying.
They had both used each other.
He married to satisfy his father and avoid constant pressure to get married.
Yvette didn’t mind his secret affection for someone else, and he cared equally little about hers.
Their marriage had never been anything more than an arranged business union.
But somewhere along the way, his heart had broken the deal.
“You have work tomorrow. Go upstairs, wash up, and get some sleep,” Brandon said calmly.

Yvette nodded. She stared at him for a long moment before turning toward the stairs.
She kept glancing back at him on the sofa as she walked.

He sat there motionless, neither scrolling his phone nor watching TV, cold and detached.
Ever since he’d found her birth control pills, Brandon’s attitude toward her had shifted drastically.
Before, he would always grab her hand and pull her close whenever he saw her. He loved playing with her fingers, whispering by her ear, and holding her waist.
He would kiss her when no one was around.
Now, he barely touched her at all.
Without that physical intimacy, what was left between them?
After her shower, Yvette climbed into their big empty bed. Brandon still hadn’t come back to the room.
She checked the time. It was nearly midnight.
The spot beside her was cold and vacant.
She turned off the lights, rolled over, and slowly drifted off to sleep in dead silence, her heart heavy and gloomy.
Their newlywed honeymoon phase had ended far sooner than she’d imagined.
Perhaps this was what marriage truly was. Without real love, no marriage could stay endlessly happy.
A month after returning, Riley left the country again.
She still had overseas studies to finish and couldn’t stay in the country for long.
Yvette stopped coming home late. She went to work and came back on time every day. Brandon still drove her to and from work, yet they treated each other with distant politeness.
“Your friend hasn’t come to see you lately?” Brandon asked casually.
“Riley returned overseas to finish studies, with one year of schooling remaining.”
Brandon’s expression darkened, and he simply muttered, “I see.”

Staring at the heavy traffic ahead, Yvette plucked up her courage and spoke hesitantly.

“Brandon, Riley thinks a lot of big domestic companies have great prospects. She’s especially optimistic about Aurelium Group. She wants to apply for a job there after graduation. Could you give her a chance?”
Brandon’s grip tightened on the steering wheel, veins faintly showing on the back of his hand His face turned cold as he kept his eyes fixed on the road.
Seeing his silence, Yvette hurried to add, “Riley just asked me to pass the message. You don’t have to force yourself. If…”
Before she could finish, he cut her off in an indifferent tone. “Sure. Tell Riley to apply after graduation.”
Yvette froze and glanced at his sharp side profile. His entire aura felt icy, his jaw tightly tensed.
“Thank you.” She felt awkward, keenly aware that he was growing colder by the day.
Brandon dropped her off at the company. She stood on the curb and waved at him.
Yet he never glanced her way and drove off.
Yvette stood there like a fool, her smile fading and her waving hand slowly dropping to her side.
A heavy weight pressed down on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
She let out a long quiet breath, grabbed her bag, and walked back into the office building.
