He grabbed her hand and pressed it flat against his chest, letting her feel his steady heartbeat. “Every beat of my heart is only for you now.”
Yvette pulled her hand away. “I’m sorry, but I can’t bring myself to believe you.”
“Yeah. Without trust, nothing I do will ever be enough,” Brandon muttered bitterly. “If you’re set on a divorce, every single word you say is just an excuse.”
Yvette picked up her phone and turned it back on. “Let’s keep this divorce between us. We’ll tell our families once all the paperwork is finalized.”
Brandon stayed silent. He slouched in the wicker chair, head tilted back. He looked broken, his eyes squeezed shut as he drowned in his own misery.
Yvette turned and left the balcony.
She walked into the dressing room to grab her pajamas, and her eyes drifted toward Brandon’s closet once again.
That jewelry box had been pricking at her heart for months. She’d waited for him to get rid of
Even just hiding it would’ve been fine. Couldn’t he at least pretend for her?
Riley had been right all along.
She’d lost herself completely over Brandon.
She knew he’d loved someone else, yet she’d still rushed to him like a moth flying into fire. Now she’d finally gotten burned.
There were pains she thought she could tolerate, until one day she simply couldn’t anymore.
At least she’d had him. He was gentle and handsome, and he’d made her happy. She had no regrets about that.
Splitting up at their best meant only good memories would stay.
Yvette showered and lay down to sleep.
She didn’t eat any dinner.

Brandon wasn’t in bed. Hunger twisted in her stomach, so she headed downstairs to find something to eat.
She spotted him in the living room. He sat motionless on the sofa in casual clothes, lost in a blank daze.
Yvette glanced at the wall clock–it was one in the morning.
“Why aren’t you asleep?” She stopped beside him.
Brandon slowly lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, and he wore a faint, sorrowful smile. “Did hunger wake you up?”
Yvette nodded.
“What do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you.” Brandon stood up and headed for the kitchen.
Yvette hurried after him and grabbed his arm. “Brandon, don’t be like this.”
He stared at her helplessly. “I treated you well, gave you all the emotional support, bought you fancy gifts and met all your physical needs. I just don’t know what more I can do. Just tell me straight. Give me something to work with.”
His words brought tears to Yvette’s eyes.
Her voice cracked as she cried. “You keep bending over backward for me. Everyone thinks you love me, and I almost believed it too. But you still haven’t gotten over Zoe. You refuse to throw away that custom bracelet for her, and you keep it where you can always see it.”
Brandon froze, caught off guard. “What bracelet?”
“The gift box in your closet. The birthday present you had made for Zoe.” Big tears rolled down her cheeks, raw hurt shining in her
eyes.
Brandon said nothing. His long fingers wrapped around her wrist. The warmth of his palm made her flinch.
He gripped her hand firmly and strode toward the stairs.
Once inside the walk–in closet, he let go of her hand and began searching for the box she’d mentioned.
He yanked open several jewelry drawers, but found nothing.

Yvette watched the normally calm, collected man rummage frantically through his drawers like a caged beast.
His rough, urgent movements looked genuine; he truly had forgotten where it was.
