“I can give back all the jewelry you bought me. The gifts, the wedding fees, everything-” Yvette spoke nervously, before Brandon cut her off sharply.
“Yvette Jensen, do I look like I’m short on cash?”
Yvette froze, tears welling up in her eyes.
Brandon always called her by her full name when he was mad.
They stared each other down in tense silence. Just then, her phone lit up on the table. Yvette wiped her tears and reached for it.
Brandon stood up and snatched the phone first. He saw the incoming video call. The name was still Ray.
Anger flared in his eyes. He handed the phone to Yvette.
“Put it on speaker.”
Yvette stared at him in shock. His demand felt harsh.
“Scared?” Brandon’s face turned dark.
The phone kept ringing, sharp and irritating. Yvette took the phone and answered it, turning on speaker.
“Riley, I’m currently—”
Before she could finish, Riley’s anxious voice cut through.
“Yvette, did you talk to Brandon yet?”
Brandon grabbed the phone out of her hand in one swift move. He turned his back to her and snapped into the speaker, “Talk about what? Getting a divorce?”
“Brandon, don’t do this.” Yvette panicked and tried to grab her phone back.
Brandon was tall. He pinned her wrist down with one hand, holding her still. With his other hand, he lifted the phone higher, completely out of her reach.
He was barely holding his rage back.

Riley heard Yvette’s shaky voice and shouted angrily through the phone, “Brandon, if you hurt Yvette, I swear I won’t let you get away with it.”
“Me? Hurting her?” Brandon let out a cold laugh. “Who the hell are you to meddle in our marriage?”
“I’m her best friend.”
“A best friend who tells her to leave her husband?”
“Because you don’t deserve her.”
Brandon scoffed.
“You were with someone else when she liked you. She’s already married, yet you rush right back to her right after breaking up. Don’t act like you’re any better.”
Riley let out a cold huff.
“If her family let us be together, I’d treat her a hundred times better than you
do.”
“Keep dreaming. You’ll never get your chance,” Brandon snarled and hung up instantly.
He glanced down at Yvette. She was already crying.
He gripped the phone tight, burning with suppressed fury. His chest felt like it was on fire.
The phone rang again. He powered it off and tossed it onto the table.
He let go of Yvette’s wrist. He ran a hand roughly through his hair and took a deep breath. His eyes turned red.
“Sounded like a girl.”
Yvette nodded.
“She likes girls?”
Yvette nodded again.
Brandon closed his eyes, tilting his head back toward the dim sky. His chest heaved. The pain drained all his strength.
It took him a long time to calm down. He grabbed her shoulders, staring straight into her eyes.

“Yvette, was I just your escape plan? Were you using me?”

“I wasn’t.” Yvette’s voice trembled with grievance. “Riley and I are just friends, nothing more.”
“Your family wouldn’t let you be with a girl. So you married me. You satisfied your family, escaped your sister’s bullying, and still got to stay close to her. Easy deal, isn’t it?”
“It wasn’t like that.” Yvette sniffled, tears streaming down her face as she looked up at him.
“You changed the second she came back.” A bitter smile tugged at Brandon’s lips. His face was dark, anger mixing with hurt in his red eyes.
“I’ve treated you so well, yet you still want to leave me. Don’t tell me it has nothing to do with her. Give me a real reason. Why the divorce?”
“I regret it.”
Brandon frowned in confusion.
“I regret marrying you without building real feelings first. This marriage can’t withstand any hardships.”
Brandon let go of her. He walked to the balcony railing, resting both palms on it. His shoulders slouched under invisible weight. He kept his head down, too heartbroken to speak.
Empty excuses.
Deep down, she just didn’t love him.
Yvette walked up behind him, consumed by guilt.
“Brandon, I’m sorry…”
