“Come straight to me whenever something bothers you. Don’t keep overthinking alone.” Brandon’s voice was thick with sleep, yet undeniably gentle. “I’ll never lie to you.”
Yvette nestled her face against his chest, breathing in his clean, crisp scent.
“Okay,” she murmured softly.
“Yvette… do you love me?” There was a raw, vulnerable edge in his hoarse tone.
It was three in the morning.
Exhausted as she was, his question jolted her fully awake. She lifted her head, gazing at the faint shadow of his jaw in the dark room.
Her silence dragged on. Brandon let out a quiet sigh and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. “It’s fine. We’ve got all the time in the world. Just don’t leave me. I’ll earn your love sooner or later.”
“I…”
“I only have one rule. Cut off contact with her.”
“Riley’s nothing more than my childhood best friend,” Yvette hurried to explain.
Brandon swallowed hard, his tone dropping into a dull, bitter murmur. “That person you’ve had feelings for… do I know them?”
“Yes,” Yvette answered truthfully.
Brandon pulled her tighter, burying his face in the crook of her neck without another word.
Yvette could clearly feel his restlessness and uncertainty.
After a long beat of silence, he whispered against her skin, “Whoever he is, forget him.”
A faint smile tugged at Yvette’s lips. “I can’t.”
Brandon frowned, his tone sharpening slightly. “Do you still want to make this marriage work?”
“I do.”

“If your heart belongs to someone else, what am I to you?” His voice dripped with quiet agony. “Are you still set on divorcing me?”
The unease laced in his tone made her throat tighten, her heart hammering wildly in her chest.
She reached up and smoothed out his furrowed brows. Her fingertips grazed his damp lashes, and she finally mustered up her courage.
“The person you want me to forget… is you.”
Brandon snapped his head up. Their noses nearly touched in the darkness.
His quick, shaky breaths fanned over her flushed cheeks. His voice rumbled deep in his chest. “What did you just say?”
“I’ve been in love with you ever since you saved me.” Yvette’s voice trembled, old memories crashing over her. “It’s been six years.”
Brandon froze, his Adam’s apple bobbing, his voice hoarse. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was too scared.” She hid her face deeper into his chest, her voice muffled. “You were always surrounded by amazing people. I never dared confess. When you wanted to get married, I lied to myself. I told myself staying by your side, even as a last resort, was enough.”
Brandon squeezed her tightly, holding her like he wanted to merge her into his own body.
He leaned down and captured her trembling lips. The kiss was overflowing with tenderness, tangled with regret and aching affection.
“Silly girl,” he breathed against her warm cheek.
The sky paled softly with the first hint of dawn by the time Yvette drifted off in his arms.
Brandon stayed wide awake, staring at her puffy eyes. The thought of her quiet, timid devotion over the years left a dull pain in his chest.
He gently tucked the stray hairs away from her face, silently vowing to never let her feel unsafe again.
When Yvette woke up at noon, Brandon was already gone.
A warm bowl of oatmeal sat on the nightstand next to a sticky note. His bold, sharp handwriting read, “Work emergency. Wait for me to get back. Your breakfast is in the warmer. Ask the maid to reheat it if it’s cold.”

She held the note and smiled to herself for a long while before dragging herself out of bed to get ready and head downstairs.
Even after breakfast, a restless unease lingered in her chest. She dialed her mother’s number. “Mom, I wanna come over. Are you home?”
“I’m home. What’s wrong?”
“I need to talk to you about something.”
