Yvette nodded, yet a restless knot stayed twisted in her stomach.

She spent the entire afternoon at her parents‘ home. She made idle small talk with her mother, but the crippling fear of her infertility pressed down on her.
Darkness had fallen by the time she drove back to the villa.
Brandon’s car sat parked in the garage, and warm golden light spilled from the entryway.
She’d barely kicked off her shoes when strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, enveloping her in his cedar scent.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were heading to your folks‘ house?” Brandon murmured, resting his chin on the crown of her head. His voice held a quiet, childlike hurt. “I wrapped up my meetings early to surprise you, and you were gone.”
Yvette turned in his hold and looped her arms loosely around his waist. She stared up at the exhaustion lingering in his eyes. “I just wanted to see Mom.” The words died on her tongue. Remembering her mother’s warning, she couldn’t bring herself to confess her secret.
Brandon gave her cheek a soft pinch. “Next time, take me with you. It’s a husband’s job to drive his wife anywhere she wants to go.” He tugged her toward the dining room, where the table was lined with all her favorite dishes, still steaming hot.
Over dinner, Brandon piled food onto her plate. “Eat up. You’ve gotten too thin lately.”
Yvette glanced down at the heap of shrimp on her plate. Her heart warmed, yet a sharp, bitter twinge lingered in her chest.
If Brandon ever found out she couldn’t have kids, would he still treat her this gently?
Late into the night, Yvette lay curled in Brandon’s embrace. She listened to his steady heartbeat, wide awake and trapped in her messy thoughts.
Brandon felt her tension and pulled her tighter against his chest. “What’s on your mind?”
Yvette bit her lower lip. “What if… we never have kids? Would you be disappointed?”
His body went rigid for a split second in the dark. Yvette’s breath caught in her throat.
“You silly thing.” Brandon pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. “You’re my everything. Kids don’t define us, no matter what.” He stroked slow lines along her back. “Quit overthinking, yeah?”

Yvette buried her face deeper into his chest. Silent tears soaked through his thin pajama top.
His words warmed her heart, but guilt gnawed at her. She swallowed the truth down, too cowardly to admit it.
The next morning, Yvette was jolted awake by her ringing phone.
It was her older sister, Judith.
The second she answered, a shrill, mocking laugh cut through the line. “Hey, word is you can’t have kids?”
Ice flooded Yvette’s veins. Her fingers trembled around her phone. “How did you find out?”
“Mom told me.” Judith’s tone dripped with arrogant smugness.
Yvette froze stiff on the bed, a sharp ringing buzzing in her ears. A raw ache pierced straight through her heart.
Her own mother had betrayed her again.
She’d begged her to keep it a secret, yet the secret had leaked out anyway.
Now that Judith knew, what cruel scheme would she cook up next?
“What do you want from me?” Yvette’s voice shook with undisguised panic.
Judith’s laugh was cold and venomous, slicing through the phone. “I’m not after anything. I’m just making you face reality. The Whitmore family needs an heir. Do you think he’ll keep a barren wife?”
She dragged the cruel word out slowly, her tone laced with mockery. “If I were you, I’d file for divorce. Don’t chain a good man down.”
Yvette’s knuckles whitened as she gripped her phone tighter, her throat tightening. “My marriage with Brandon is none of your business.”
“Oh? You’re defending him now?” Judith scoffed. The faint clink of porcelain echoed in the background; she was clearly sipping coffee casually.
“Brandon’s always loved Zoe. You’re nothing but a baby–making tool to him. Once he and his father learn you can’t conceive, they’ll toss you out without a second thought.
“Save yourself the humiliation and leave on your own terms.”

Cold chills crawled across Yvette’s skin. She replayed Brandon’s tender promises in her head, yet Judith’s vicious words tainted every warm memory, turning them gray and hollow.
She forced herself to push back. “Brandon said he doesn’t care about having children.”
“You’re hopelessly naive.” Judith raised her voice sharply, the tone grating against Yvette’s eardrums. “Men never mean the sweet things they say in bed. Once the excitement fades, he’ll watch other people’s kids and grow to hate you for it.
