Girls from the line next to him kept staring.
It got under his skin.

He rolled his eyes internally. What are they staring at?If they love staring at people that much, go watch monkeys at the zoo.
The principal finished his speech on stage, then the vice principal took over, followed by one department head after another.
It was an endless stream of empty talk. Julian was drained and sleepy, baking under the sun while being forced to stand.
He dropped into a squat, but Luke yanked him right back up.
“Stay on your feet. The teacher’s got her eyes on you.”
“When is this ever gonna end? So much pointless rambling,” Julian grumbled, clearly irritated.
His teacher overheard every word. Her face turned cold, and she shot him a sharp look.
Just then, the teacher on stage spoke up.
“This year, we are glad to welcome outstanding students from Oakridge High. They’ll share their study methods with us. Pay close attention and learn from them…”
Luke shook Julian’s arm in excitement.
“They’re from Oakridge High. I heard one freshman aced the entrance exam and ranked number one in the whole state.”
Julian kept his head down, kicking at the sand with his hands stuffed in his pockets.
“Why does everybody talk so much?” he muttered sourly.
A crisp, soft female voice carried across the open field.
It sounded gentle and smooth, yet steady and confident at the same time.
“Good morning, everyone. I’m honored to speak today. My name is Iris Whitlow, and I’m a new student at Oakridge High…”

on stage in front of the whole school?”
Julian pressed his jaw tight, forcing a bitter smile. He dragged his feet back into line.
He’d missed his chance to meet her, but he quickly dug up every detail he could find.

She had endless admirers, but she kept her distance from all boys and turned down every confession without hesitation.
Studying was her only hobby–she cared about nothing but books.
She came from a simple rural family. Both her parents were alive, and she had one older brother.
After that day, Julian still slept through most of his classes.
But he picked up a new daily habit after school.
He rode his bike miles out of his way to wait outside Oakridge High School, hoping to catch another glimpse of her.
He did this every single day for a month straight.
He spotted her a handful of times, but only for fleeting seconds.
Iris walked with purpose, never wasting a single moment, and she was always gone in an
instant.
One evening, Julian waited by the school gate yet again.
He secretly wished he could get into Oakridge High School.
But it was the state’s top school, impossible to get into without stellar grades.
His combined scores across all subjects never even hit a hundred points.
The school was out of his league.
He figured he wouldn’t see her that day.
As he turned his bike to leave, Iris walked toward him with her arms stacked full of books.
Julian froze in place.
