"I was having dinner with some friends," Yelena said, pausing before casually dropping the news. "I had just started at PurePath Biologics, but Chisholm Vance fired me."
Lyanna frowned, her displeasure obvious. "With your background and degree, why let anyone treat you like that? With Clive in your corner, you could walk into any office in the city."
"I want to make it on my own merits," Yelena replied smoothly. "I just didn't expect you to partner with PurePath. I figured Mr. Vance would only play favorites with Whitley..."
"Favor her?" Lyanna scoffed. "How can she even hold a candle to you?"
"If she hadn't wedged herself between you two back then, you and Clive would've been together. You were childhood sweethearts. She had no right to become Mrs. Sherwood."
Lyanna's expression darkened. "Whitley is just eaten alive by jealousy. I treated her like my own flesh and blood. She reaped the benefits of our family for two decades, yet she can't stand to see you succeed. My poor girl, you've suffered enough."
Just talking about it made her chest tighten with frustration.
Yelena lowered her gaze, hiding the satisfied smile in her eyes.
Lyanna continued, "Tonight at the dinner, I saw Whitley just pouring drinks and running interference. She looked like a glorified assistant."
"She stole your project, and you were gracious enough to let it slide. But I heard she actually wants to clear her name publicly. She doesn't know her place."
"Who knows who she copied off in school back in the day. She completely fooled me, too."
Lyanna sighed, wishing she could turn back time. "I should have disciplined her more. It was my coddling that led to this. Isn't Clive going to reign her in?"
"They're getting a divorce soon," Yelena said lightly.
Lyanna froze for a moment before bringing the conversation to a hushed tone. "Then your moment is here. The baby you're carrying... is it his?"
"You were meant to marry him from the start. Now that you're pregnant, the title of Mrs. Sherwood is yours. It's only a matter of time."
Lyanna spoke cryptically, but the implication was crystal clear.
Yelena just smiled softly, a deep calculation lingering in her eyes.
Lyanna understood immediately. She had her answer.
"Personal and professional boundaries have to remain separate. We still need to negotiate," Chisholm stated.
Just then, Whitley pushed the door open and walked in. "The Nash family is miles ahead in this specific tech. We're all operating in the same industry. We can't sabotage the company's future just because of my personal baggage."
Zinnia still looked conflicted. "But..."
Whitley gave a faint smile. "We aren't kids anymore. There's no need to let money get in the way."
"Until we develop our own alternative tech, we can't burn bridges out of spite. I don't mind, so you shouldn't either."
Watching her absolute decisiveness, Chisholm felt a surge of quiet admiration.
Her resilience—her ability to bend without breaking—was exactly what would propel her to the top.
"Then we'll keep it strictly business," Chisholm concluded.
