"I don't really understand his allergies, and after he had that severe reaction last time, I'm still terrified of making a mistake," Yelena said, her voice dripping with faux concern. "You raised him for so long, you must still care about him. You wouldn't just abandon him, would you? If it's inconvenient, you can always come back to the house to see me. I'm always there."
Always there. She spoke as if the house already belonged to her and Clive.
Whitley let out a harsh laugh. The audacity was almost impressive. Did Yelena really think she could use Leroy Sherwood to emotionally blackmail her? That ungrateful brat meant absolutely nothing to her anymore.
She was immune to these games.
"If you actually cared about him like a real sister, you wouldn't have abandoned him when he needed you most, just so you could chase fame and money."
"Coming back now to play the doting caretaker? We both know you're just trying to secure your spot as the next Mrs. Sherwood."
Yelena’s face stiffened. The truth hit a little too close to home.
"You always misunderstand Clive and me. We grew up together, that's all," Yelena said, her voice taking on a wounded, trembling quality. She pushed the cup of scalding tea forward again. "Since there's so much bad blood between us, why don't we just talk it out today?"
Whitley had zero patience for this theatrical performance. Her face stone-cold, she turned away.
Yelena reached out and grabbed her arm. Caught off guard, Whitley’s momentum pulled her directly into the boiling cup.
Crash—
The cup hit the pavement, shattering.
The scalding liquid splashed violently across Whitley’s wrist and forearm. The partially healed burns flared with excruciating, fiery pain, the skin instantly turning a furious red.
But it was Yelena who let out a piercing scream.
"What happened?"
She took a deep breath, forcing down the suffocating weight in her chest, and answered.
"Everything is set up backstage," Chisholm's voice was sharp and professional. "The slides, the raw logs, the timelines—all the data you gave me is loaded onto the main screen."
"The main event starts in an hour. I'll give the opening address, and then I'll pass the mic to you. You can use your presentation to publicly annihilate these plagiarism rumors once and for all."
"Come backstage now and verify everything is exactly how you want it."
Whitley’s fingers tightened around her phone. "I'm on my way," she said softly.
Hanging up, she didn't look back. She straightened her spine and walked toward the backstage area.
She couldn't wait to see how Clive would try to protect Yelena once the undeniable truth was blasted across a fifty-foot screen for the entire world to see.
