His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 145

Leroy was still in school. Whenever there was a massive storm or some disruption, he wouldn't return to the Sherwood Manor; he'd crash at the marital house instead.

He was the quintessential spoiled heir, used to treating Whitley like the help the second he walked through the door. There was a time when Whitley had coddled him like her own little brother. And this ungrateful brat was her reward.

Whitley ignored him. Her head felt like it was packed with lead, and her limbs were weak. A fever was definitely setting in.

The housekeeper hurried out of the kitchen and gasped. "Mrs. Sherwood, you're drenched! Please go upstairs and take a hot shower before you catch your death."

"No need," Whitley shook her head. "Is there a package that arrived from overseas? A green box?"

"I believe so. Let me go check."

Whitley stood in the center of the living room, her sodden clothes clinging to her, her teeth chattering slightly from the chill.

Leroy pulled off his headset and shot her a sidelong glance, his tone dripping with condescension. "If you'd just admit you were wrong and act like a good wife—serve my brother and Grandma properly—I might let you stay in this house."

"Otherwise, what's the point of running around doing your little research projects? How much money does that even make? You're better off staying home as the young madam."

Whitley met his gaze, her eyes glacial. "This isn't my home, and I won't be staying."

Leroy let out a derisive snort. "Stop faking it. You're just obsessed with our money. Once my brother marries Yelena, you'll be absolute trash."

At that moment, the housekeeper returned holding the box, her face tight with awkwardness. "Mrs. Sherwood, the package... the young master opened it."

The lid was ajar. Inside sat the custom jade bangle Bonnie had secured for her.

Leroy snatched the box out of the housekeeper's hands, pulling the bangle out to play with it. He raised an eyebrow at Whitley. "Pretty expensive, right? You want it back? Fine. Apologize to me, swear you'll stop threatening divorce, and I'll hand it over."

"That belongs to me," Whitley's voice dropped to a dangerous octave.

"Yours?" Leroy scoffed. "This house belongs to the Sherwoods. Everything inside it belongs to the Sherwoods. You're just a squatter."

He casually tossed the bangle from hand to hand, clearly enjoying the color draining from Whitley's face. Yelena had been in his ear for weeks, twisting his perception of Whitley. Now, he was just actively looking for a fight.

Whitley held out her hand. "Give it back."

She stood there, shivering violently as the room spun. Dark spots danced at the edges of her vision.

She finally understood. In this house, everything she cherished could be casually trampled and destroyed.

Not a single person was on her side.

No one would ever protect her.

The fever and heartbreak slammed into her simultaneously. She swayed, forced to brace her hand against the wall just to stay standing.

She didn't look at Leroy again. She didn't look at the shattered jade.

Whitley turned around and walked out, step by step, back into the torrential rain.

This time, she was never coming back.
