Yelena raised her hand, lightly tracing the bracelet with a soft, affectionate smile. "Thank you. It's a gift from Mr. Sherwood."
"Mr. Sherwood?" A murmur of surprise rippled through the onlookers. "You look so young, Ms. Nash. Whoever this man is, he's incredibly lucky to have you. Which prominent family is he from?"
Everyone in their elite circle knew Clive was married, but he had kept his wife's identity buried. Now, seeing him publicly escorting Yelena and acting so intimately, the crowd had already drawn their own conclusions.
Yelena maintained her flawless, poised smile. "I'd rather keep my private life private, but thank you for your kind words."
Right on cue, her phone rang.
Glancing at the caller ID, her smile widened. She answered it right there on speakerphone.
It wasn't a business call. It was the head housekeeper from the Sherwood estate, respectfully asking for her approval on household matters.
Yelena gave her instructions with the effortless authority of a matriarch, cementing the narrative in everyone's minds.
The surrounding guests exchanged knowing glances, their eyes darting between Yelena and Clive. The implication was loud and clear.
Clive stood there, his face completely unreadable. He did absolutely nothing to correct the assumption. In fact, his silence was a blatant endorsement.
Yelena looked up at him playfully. "Clive, that was the estate calling. Everything is fine."
Clive gave a subtle nod, entirely unfazed.
Yelena sighed with a well-practiced, indulgent smile. "Running a house takes so much work, but someone has to do it."
Clive didn't flinch. There was no awkwardness, no rush to explain. He just smoothly guided her toward the VIP check-in, as if the entire performance was perfectly normal.
"I don't care about dragging her through the mud for society gossip."
"What I care about is cutting the cord on this toxic marriage, taking back my life, and climbing so high that he can never touch me again."
She didn't want people's pity. She didn't want to play the scorned wife.
She wanted power. She wanted the absolute certainty that no one would ever be able to use her or throw her away again.
The more public Clive and Yelena were, the better. It just proved that this rotten marriage wasn't worth saving.
The only way out was up.
Looking at the relentless determination in her eyes, Chisholm swallowed his anger. He nodded slowly. "Whatever you decide, I've got your back."
