A sharp breeze swept through the corridor, carrying a biting chill that extinguished whatever pathetic, lingering hope Whitley still held onto.
She let out a quiet, self-deprecating laugh, her eyes completely empty.
Fine.
The court summons would expire in a matter of days anyway.
The ugly truth was going to hit the fan soon enough.
There was no point rushing it. It wasn't like he cared anyway.
Without wasting another second on the terrace, Whitley turned on her heel and headed straight back to the summit.
Chisholm Vance had already secured a private meeting with Reid Montgomery. When he saw her walk in, he asked casually, "Where'd you disappear to?"
"Just getting some air."
"Let's go. VIP lounge," Chisholm said, grabbing his files. "Montgomery Group's extraction tech is exactly what we need. If we lock them down, we're golden for the bidding war."
They took the elevator up to the executive suite.
Reid was sitting behind an ornate tea table, brewing a fresh pot. Seeing them enter, he gave a curt nod. "Mr. Vance. Ms. Nash. Have a seat."
Skipping the small talk, Reid cut straight to the chase. "I understand PurePath is gearing up for the government biomedical contract."
"We are," Chisholm agreed, gesturing to his side. "And Whitley here is the lead director for the entire project."
Reid's hand stalled as he poured the tea. His eyes shifted to Whitley, flashing with undeniable contempt, before his polite smile thinned into something sharp.
"I've always respected your judgment, Mr. Vance. But I have to admit, I'm shocked today."
Reid barely glanced at him. "I'm just trying to stop you from making a fatal mistake."
His assistant leaned down and whispered something in Reid's ear. Reid stood up and walked out without another word, not even bothering to offer a fake goodbye.
"Unbelievable!" Chisholm practically snarled as they walked to the elevator. "A boardroom full of billionaires and they act like high schoolers. It's pathetic!"
Whitley quietly organized her folders, her face perfectly composed. She hadn't let the insult rattle her at all.
She knew exactly how this world worked. The old boys' club protected its own. Their prejudices were hardwired. Defending herself with words was a waste of breath.
Chisholm was so furious he was ready to blacklist Montgomery Group entirely.
"We don't need them. We can win this bid without them. And when we do, they'll be begging to work with us."
