His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 16

She took a deep breath, her voice remarkably steady. "I understand."

Once she finalized this national pharmacology project, she would go straight to the hospital and schedule the surgery.

As for the man who had just walked out the door, she figured he would probably never know.

The next morning.

Whitley's face was terrifyingly pale. She layered on makeup to hide the exhaustion and the sickly pallor of her skin.

Today was the day the final results for the national pharmacology project were announced. Everyone involved had to be at the venue to hear the verdict. This was the field she had dedicated years to, and it was the one contract she was determined to win, even if it took her last breath.

Her phone buzzed. It was Chisholm. "Feeling any better?"

"I'm fine. I can manage," she replied softly.

"Things are crazy at the lab, so I can't get away. I need you to be there for the results," Chisholm paused, his tone laced with hesitation. "Are you absolutely sure you can handle this alone?"

"I've got it. Don't worry."

She arrived at the venue. Right after signing in and walking toward the hall, a familiar, grating voice called out from behind her.

"Hello!"

Whitley froze on pure instinct. But as she turned around, she realized the greeting wasn't directed at her at all. Leroy Sherwood's eyes were locked onto Yelena, who was standing just a few feet away. He was flashing a cocky, indulgent smile.

Yelena's face instantly darkened.

Leroy's expression twisted in rage, his jaw clenching. How dare this shameless woman act like she had the moral high ground?

"You've got a lot of nerve, Whitley! You're the gold digger who crawled into his bed and stole him in the first place!"

"Leroy," Clive's voice cut through the air, low and commanding. He didn't raise his voice, but the oppressive authority in it was unmistakable.

Leroy looked furious. "Clive..."

Clive's expression remained perfectly flat. He shot a glance at Whitley, his dark eyes unfathomable. "She is still my wife."
