His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 20

Dr. Landon gave her a fleeting, calculating look, but ultimately kept his mouth shut and followed the two of them inside.

The three figures vanished behind the heavy doors of the Rainfall Club. Not one of them looked back.

Whitley sat alone in the massive, empty car, a crushing weight pressing down on her chest until she couldn't breathe.

Tonight, she had literally been nothing but a driver. And he had treated her exactly like one.

She stared at the closed doors and slowly shut her eyes.

She had to find a way to get Clive completely alone. They needed to talk.

He probably still thought her asking for a divorce was just some dramatic tantrum.

Sitting in the quiet car, Whitley pulled out her phone and sent Clive a text.

[Let's talk alone after you're done.]

She hit send.

Unsurprisingly, there was no reply.

She didn't leave. She just sat quietly in the driver's seat and waited. She never knew Clive's schedule, so pinning him down for a serious conversation was nearly impossible. This was her only chance.

Two hours later.

The doors of the Rainfall Club finally opened. Clive and Yelena walked out side by side, their body language effortlessly intimate.

Whitley had fallen asleep against the steering wheel. The compounded exhaustion of the last few days and the relentless pain of her illness made it impossible to keep her eyes open.

A few sharp taps against the glass jolted her awake.

She snapped her eyes open, immediately colliding with Clive's fathomless dark gaze.

"We're heading back," he said flatly.

The drive was dead silent. Whitley dropped Dr. Landon off at his residence first.

Once the doctor was gone, the three of them were trapped in the suffocating confines of the car. The air was thick with an unspoken, heavy intimacy between the two in the back. Even in total silence, Yelena seemed to command all the warmth in the space.

They pulled up to Yelena's apartment building. Yelena softly said her goodbyes and stepped out.

Clive watched her walk away. "Go on up."

Yelena glanced at Whitley, then bit her lip. "Talk to her nicely. I'll head up now."

Whitley's fingers went still.

This was technically marital property, so there was no reason not to take it. Besides, she was going to need a lot of money for her surgery and chemo.

She quietly snapped the box shut and kept it.

Seeing her accept it, Clive's tone remained cool and detached. "Like it? I'll buy you another one next time."

In his eyes, all her recent coldness, her hostility, and her distancing were just a calculated play to extort more gifts from him.

Whitley gripped the freezing velvet box, her chest throbbing.

In the past, if he had given her something like this, she would have been overjoyed. She would have posted pictures online, desperate to show the world that her husband loved her.

But now...

It only proved one thing.

He truly believed she was just acting out. He honestly thought he could pacify her with a shiny bracelet.

Whitley took a deep, steadying breath. "Clive, let's find a time that works for you. We're getting a divorce."
