Whitley froze.
Chilton and Lyanna’s expressions morphed into pure panic.
Caleb instantly scooped Yelena up into his arms, turning his furious gaze onto Whitley. "If anything happens to Yelena or the baby, I swear I will make you regret you were ever born!"
Meanwhile.
Clive Sherwood walked out of the Foreign Office, checking his phone. He had a missed call from the Manor.
Since he rarely went back to the family estate, his presence was constantly requested.
"Bring Whitley home for dinner tonight," his mother’s message read.
Clive tapped a quick reply. "Got it."
Glancing at his watch, he got into the Armored Sentinel and drove straight to the villa.
The house was completely empty.
Zita was in the middle of dusting the living room. "Mr. Sherwood. The missus... she packed up all her things and left."
Clive’s footsteps faltered for half a second before he continued walking. "Leave it. She'll be back in a couple of days."
This wasn't the first time Whitley had thrown a tantrum. But she always knew her limits. She always came back.
Zita looked worried. "She seemed pretty serious this time, sir."
Clive didn't respond, walking straight into his study and shutting the door. It was his private sanctuary; no one else was allowed inside.
Watching him go, Zita let out a heavy sigh and shook her head.
At the hospital, Whitley stood silently in the corridor with the Nash family as they waited for the doctor.
Yelena’s eyes filled with crocodile tears. "Please, don't yell at her anymore. She's younger than me; she didn't mean it. The doctor said I'm fine."
Caleb clenched his jaw. "You let her walk all over you just because she’s younger."
Whitley knew that any defense she offered right now would just be background noise. She was exhausted down to her bones. For four years, she had fought to clear her name, and for four years, she had lost.
"Let me know when the final test results are out," Whitley said, her voice completely dead.
She turned and walked away.
"What an absolute sociopath," Lyanna hissed behind her. "If I had known she wasn't our flesh and blood, I would have left her on the streets. To think we spoiled her rotten all these years!"
Whitley's footsteps hitched.
A dull, throbbing pain radiated through her chest.
