His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 27

The words "Divorce Settlement Agreement" were boldly printed across the top of the crisp white paper.

Clive’s eyelashes flickered, but his expression remained a perfectly sculpted mask of indifference. He didn't take the document.

The air in the car instantly felt like it had been sucked out. Up front, Cole nervously checked the rearview mirror before snapping his eyes back to the road, his grip white-knuckling the steering wheel.

Clive just stared at her. The faint trace of amusement that had been in his eyes completely vanished, replaced by a dark, chilling intensity.

"What exactly is your problem?" Clive’s voice was dangerously low. "Have I not given you enough? What more do you want?"

Her problem? He thought she was throwing a tantrum because she wanted more *things*?

Whitley almost laughed at the sheer absurdity of it. She opened her mouth to snap back.

Suddenly, Clive’s phone lit up the dark interior.

Whitley glanced at the screen. Of course. Yelena.

Clive answered it. Within seconds, his jaw clenched, and his expression darkened into absolute fury.

Whitley scoffed internally. It didn't take a genius to figure out what that call was about. The Nash family had likely gone home for the night, leaving Yelena completely free to put on her little performance and run to Clive with her fabricated sob story.

Hanging up, Clive’s voice cut through the silence like a blade. "Pull over."

Cole slammed on the brakes, pulling the heavy car onto the shoulder of the road.

Clive shot Whitley a look of absolute disgust. "Get out."

Two words. Cold, direct, and merciless.

He was furious.

The Manor was situated in an exclusive, heavily wooded mountain estate. The winding road down the mountain was pitch black, completely devoid of streetlights, and entirely isolated.

Whitley didn't move. "How am I supposed to get back if I get out here?"

She didn't want to breathe the same air as him, let alone argue, but she wasn't suicidal. They were in the middle of nowhere.

The air around Clive turned freezing. "I will not repeat myself."

A sharp pain pierced Whitley's chest, replaced instantly by a wave of furious clarity. "What’s wrong? Did Yelena call crying, claiming I pushed her? So your brilliant revenge is leaving me stranded on a dark mountain road?"

In the driver's seat, Cole held his breath, terrified to make a sound.

Taking a deep, shaky breath, Whitley tossed the divorce papers onto the leather seat. She unbuckled her belt, shoved the door open, and stepped out into the biting cold.

The second the heavy door clicked shut, the Armored Sentinel sped off, leaving her in the dust.

Whitley's chest constricted. The whole situation was laughable. Absolutely ridiculous.

Divorce? He scoffed. This was clearly just an aggressive, dramatic complaint about their sex life.

Whitley walked for what felt like hours before a single, weak bar of signal popped up on her phone screen.

She was completely drained, her face deathly pale. A sharp, cramping pain radiated from her abdomen, echoing through her entire body.

She collapsed onto the grassy shoulder of the road, shivering violently.

She had initially thought of calling Chisholm Vance, but given how rapidly her condition was deteriorating, she didn't want to drag him into a medical emergency. She had reached her physical absolute limit.

With trembling, ice-cold fingers, she hit dial.

"Dr. Thorne... please," she gasped, her teeth chattering. "Can you... come get me? Or... call an ambulance."

"I'm on my way," Casper replied instantly, his voice sharp with urgency.

Whitley curled into a tight ball on the side of the road, fighting to stay conscious. Her entire body felt like it was encased in ice. The pain was unbearable.

Was this how she was going to die? Out here in the dark? If she died, would anyone even care?

Just as the darkness threatened to pull her under completely, the blinding sweep of headlights sliced through the night.

Casper had arrived in record time, riding in the back of a dispatched ambulance.
