His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 29

The jade bracelet suddenly felt like a shackle of pure humiliation burning against her skin.

Before Clive could even open his mouth, Whitley unclasped the bracelet and dropped it onto the nearby counter with a sharp clatter. "I don't want your charity."

Without missing a beat, she spun on her heel and started walking away.

"What are you doing at the hospital?"

His low, commanding voice echoed down the corridor, freezing her in place.

Whitley’s spine went rigid. "That is none of your business," she replied icily.

She didn't know if his question was rooted in genuine concern or if he was just trying to maintain control. But either way, she didn't care anymore.

Without looking back, she walked away.

Yelena bit her lip, looking up at Clive with wide, innocent eyes. "Don't worry, Clive. She’s just dealing with low blood sugar. It's nothing serious."

The moment Whitley stepped back into her room, she began aggressively throwing her few belongings into her bag.

There was zero point in staying here. They had already run the necessary tests, and the IV was finished. Remaining in the same building as Clive and Yelena was just begging for a disaster.

After giving Casper a quick heads-up, she practically fled the hospital, hailing a cab straight to the Zimmerman apartment.

Sitting in the back of the taxi, staring blindly at the passing city lights, she felt an unbearable weight pressing down on her chest.

The only way she was ever going to breathe again was when that divorce was legally finalized. She absolutely refused to play the pathetic, jilted wife while her husband paraded his pregnant mistress around town.

The cab pulled into the rundown, working-class neighborhood. Looking at the crumbling brick and cracked sidewalks, Whitley felt the suffocating tension in her shoulders finally begin to ease.

She pushed the front door open.

She had only known her biological parents for four years, but they loved her fiercely. They were nothing like the manipulative, greed-driven monsters Yelena had made them out to be. They would give their lives for her.

Lamont pushed his chair back. "I'll go down to the construction site tomorrow. See if the foreman can throw me a few extra shifts. If she leaves him, she needs to know we’ve got a roof over her head."

Martha nodded resolutely. "You're right. And I'll see if the boutique needs any extra help with custom tailoring. I don't care how powerful the Sherwoods are. We might not have money, but if our girl is hurting, we are going to be her safety net."

"If she's staying here, she’s probably planning to..." Martha choked back a sob. "It's fine. She didn't get to grow up with us. I'll work my fingers to the bone if it means she gets to be happy and free."

"Shh," Lamont warned gently. "Don't say that where she can hear you. It'll just upset her."

"I know, I know..."

Leaning against her door, Whitley clamped a hand over her mouth, hot tears streaming down her face. Her body shook with silent sobs.
