Yelena was the woman Clive proudly paraded by his side. Her sudden demand to insert herself into PurePath Biologics was a targeted attack against Whitley—a blatant display of dominance.
If they agreed, it would subject Whitley to endless public humiliation.
If they refused, the government would simply award the contract to another firm. Years of blood, sweat, and tears poured into this project by PurePath would be completely wiped out, threatening the very survival of the company.
Chisholm instinctively turned his head to look at Whitley, who was standing a few feet away.
Her eyes were lowered, her long lashes casting faint shadows over her pale cheeks. She looked eerily calm, showing no reaction whatsoever to Dr. Landon's demand. It was as if they were discussing the weather rather than her own torment.
Chisholm had already made up his mind to reject the offer. Even if it meant losing the project, he absolutely refused to let Whitley be bullied like this.
But when he met Whitley's quiet, steady gaze, the words died in his throat.
Whitley knew exactly what Chisholm was thinking. But she also knew this company wasn't solely hers. She couldn't let it burn for her sake.
Breaking the tense silence, Whitley looked directly at the older man. "Dr. Landon, business is business. We would never let personal matters interfere with our work."
"If Ms. Nash wishes to join PurePath Biologics, our entire team will naturally welcome her."
Chisholm frowned, his lips parting to object.
Whitley gave a microscopic shake of her head, signaling him to stand down.
Chisholm's frown only deepened.
He knew exactly what Yelena was capable of, and he knew how much power Clive handed her. By joining PurePath, Yelena would go out of her way to undermine Whitley, humiliate her at every turn, and use Clive's influence to sabotage her work.
Whitley offered a faint, bitter smile. "Clive's return has been front-page news. He and Yelena are practically inseparable. She wants to show off. Even if I try to hide, she'll find a way to corner me."
She continued smoothly, "Besides, you saw Dr. Landon's attitude."
"If we reject them and actually piss off Clive... you know how he operates. Forget expanding PurePath; we wouldn't even survive the month."
She had weighed the pros and cons perfectly. She knew Clive's methods better than anyone.
To the outside world, he appeared polished, charming, and reasonable. But she knew the cold, impenetrable wall he built around himself. When it came to getting what he wanted, he was ruthlessly efficient and utterly devoid of mercy.
