His Last Command Came Back to Kill Him novel Chapter 73

He tilted his head slightly, his lips parting. "So, what exactly is wrong with you?"

Whitley honestly hadn't expected Clive to actually follow her lead and ask the question.

After all, their relationship as husband and wife was no different from that of strangers.

Looking at him, she gave a faint smile. "I feel sick the second I look at you."

The words hung in the air.

The corner of Clive's mouth twitched slightly. The cold indifference in his eyes deepened. Without uttering another word, he withdrew his gaze, turned, and walked straight toward the living room, leaving her with nothing but his cold back.

Today's event was a regular dinner gathering for the ladies of the Sherwood family's social circle, bringing several prominent society wives together. The atmosphere was lively and elegant.

Clive sat with them. Right as the conversation peaked, his phone suddenly buzzed.

He pulled it out and glanced at the caller ID.

The man's usually cold expression instantly softened. He stood up, walked over to the window to answer, and spoke in a tender tone Whitley had never heard directed at her. "Hey, what's wrong?"

Just those two words were enough for Whitley to know that Yelena was on the other end of the line.

Yelena truly lacked patience.

She had barely left, and now she was summoning Clive to join her.

Then again, it made sense, didn't it?

Clive was a busy man, rarely having any free time.

But whatever spare moments he did have were almost exclusively devoted to Yelena.

It was no surprise she was so clingy.

After a brief exchange, Clive hung up.

He turned to Vivienne. "Mom, something urgent came up. I have to go."

Vivienne noted her son's rushed demeanor and understood perfectly, though she chose not to pry.

But until the divorce was finalized, she had to play her part.

Whitley lowered her eyes, burying every shred of emotion.

After the dinner party concluded, Whitley returned to the Sherwood estate alone.

The massive house felt overwhelmingly empty and cold.

Instead of going to the bedroom, she sat on the living room sofa, opened her laptop, and immersed herself in work for PurePath Biologics.

She worked late into the night.

It wasn't until she heard the sound of the key turning in the front door that she slowly looked up.

Clive was back.

He returned very late, changing his shoes in the entryway before stepping inside.

Even from a distance, Whitley could catch the faint, unmistakable scent of women's perfume clinging to him.
