His Plump Mate (Book 1: The 'His' Series) novel Chapter 555

Adrian POV

I stood there, trying to understand what he just said. “What do you mean, gone? She was doing better. How is she now gone?”

He took a deep breath and started explaining. “Her vitals went into cardiac distress and oxygen deprivation from one moment to the next. That’s usually an indicator of a blood clot. Ultimately, she suffered a cardiac arrest. We were trying to locate the clot in time, but we were too late. I’m so sorry for your loss, Alpha.”

My world just stopped. She’s gone. Not gone like, moved away, and it’s for the best, gone. No. She is GONE. Dead. I will never see her again. Even if I didn’t want to see her again, there would never be an option for that to happen later.

I feel the room around me spin. My legs are going weak. I haphazardly make out the doctor grabbing me and guiding me to a chair. My body feels dead inside. Thor is whimpering in my head.

“I hate that I loved you.”

Those were my last words to her. Oh, Goddess! That’s the last memory either of us had of each other. How heartbroken and alone was she feeling when she realized she was dying? I’m a bastard. A terrible, unforgivable bastard.

I put my face in my hands and let the tears and sorrow come. The doctor is sitting beside me with a hand on my shoulder. He is quiet, but present. I have no family here with me right now, and this is what I deserve. I don’t deserve comfort. I don’t deserve mercy. I broke her with my words, and before I could apologize, she died.

I sat up and wiped my tears. “I want to see her.”

“Of course. We will also need to arrange for her funeral, Alpha.”

I nodded, still numb. “Right now, I just want to see her.”

The doctor led me to Amber’s room. She is lying on the bed, with her eyes closed. Her face looks peaceful…undisturbed.

“I’ll leave you alone. I’ll be just outside. Take all the time you need, Alpha.”

“Thank you,” I said hoarsely.

I walk over to Amber. I never wanted this. I didn’t want her dead. I only wanted us to move on with our lives separately.

“I have always loved you, Amber. I will always love you.”

I kissed her one more time on the lips and stood up, wiping my tears from her cheeks. I straighten myself up and wipe away my tears. I tuck her into the sheets and make sure I’m not disturbing her peace.

I whispered, “Ronan will die by my hands, Amber. I swear to you that I will find him, and I will kill him for what he has done.”

I harden my resolve. This happened because Amber didn’t trust me. This happened because Ronan used her vulnerability to plot against my family. This ends with me killing that bastard.

When I come out of the room, the doctor is waiting there. Standing beside him is Aric. He looks at me with sympathy. Everyone around me is looking at me that way. I take a deep breath and speak to the doctor. “Please have her cremated. Call me when it’s done.”

“Yes, Alpha,” he said gently. He turned and walked away.

Aric steps forward and unexpectedly hugs me. I’m not a bromance kind of guy, but right now, I don’t care. I need that hug. I need something to ground me.
