His words just slapped me. He doesn’t know anything, but I am sure my father painted me in a bad light, yet again. “I assure you Don Arnaldo, if you knew anything, you wouldn’t question my self-respect, integrity, and honor.” Then I look at my father, “You are a piece of work.”
My father looks at me with rage in his eyes, but I don’t give a fuck. He knows he’s lying, and I’m having to take the fall, over and over again.
Then I look at both men, “If you think I don’t have any self-respect, honor, integrity or trust, then I’m not the right one to stand by your son. I already know, he’s not fit to stand by me. I do not agree to this engagement, and I will NOT marry him.”
“THALIA!” My father roared, “APOLOGIZE, RIGHT NOW!”
I smiled and looked at Don Arnaldo. He has a gleam in his eyes like he thinks he is getting the final say, “I am sorry, Don Arnaldo. Sorry, you wasted your time.”
I turned on my heel and left. I walked out and kept going until I couldn’t hear my father’s voice anymore. Once I was far enough away, I stopped. I put my hands on my hips and look up to the sky. “WHY! WHY DO THIS TO ME!? HAVEN’T I SUFFERED ENOUGH?!” I screamed up at the sky. Maybe the Moon Goddess will hear me. I started shaking and crying.
I continued walking down the street. It’s getting colder. I didn’t have time to change or shower. I didn’t have time to grab my purse to rent a hotel room for the night. I took off and now I’m cold, inconsolable, and my face
feels swollen.
I don’t know how long I walked but eventually, I made it to the beach. I sat on the sand under the moonlight. I buried my head in my knees and let go. I cried until I couldn’t cry anymore. Then I heard familiar footsteps. Before I could react, “Thalia?”
It was Aiden. He was the only good thing that happened tonight. “Aiden? What are you doing here?” I asked,
with
my back turned to him. I don’t want him to see me the way I look right now.
“You’re crying.” He said. It wasn’t a question, but a statement. I don’t know how he knows but he answers the unspoken question for me. “I smell your tears.”
I closed my eyes and wiped my tears, “I’m okay, Aiden. You should go to your hotel and get some sleep.”
I get up to start walking away from him, but he grabs my hand gently. “Thalia, look at me, please.”
“Aiden, please, let me go.” I said, thinking about my sister and fleeing from this place. That is the only way I can be safe. It’s the only way I can keep Mia safe. I need to call my Tio Raul again and see if I can move the timeline up. I will leave in the next few days, if I can.
“Look at me, Thalia, please.”
I close my eyes and sigh. I slowly turn around. When Aiden sees my face, his eyes darken with fury.
“Who did this, Thalia? Who put their hands on you?” His voice sounds deadly.
“Aiden, leave it. I’ll handle it myself.” I said.

1 sighed, “My father,”
“I’ll fucking kill him.” He snarled.
“Aiden. I told you, I will handle it. This is nothing I’m trained to fight.”
