Adrian POV
I woke up beside Amber. She looked peaceful in her sleep. I moved a stray hair from her forehead and looked at her face.
I love my mate. I really do. I don’t understand why things are so bad between us. She won’t talk to me. She won’t let me touch her or make love to her. I wouldn’t even be able to move the hair from her face if she was awake.
I lightly kiss her lips and restrain my body. I know I’m losing her and I wish I knew why. Mom is here. Maybe she can help me by talking to her? I’ll ask her at breakfast. I don’t know what else to do.
Thor is fed up with Amber. He hurts more for me than for her. When we first realized we were mates, I was so fucking happy. She was beautiful, but her father mistreated her. He made her believe she had no worth.
I remember when he told her that no man would ever take her seriously. This was just before she turned eighteen. I was drawn to her. I felt protective of her. Even though her father was an asshole who abused her mentally and emotionally, I couldn’t act against him. I told Reid about it, and he immediately acted.
Amber’s father was furious with Amber, thinking she had said something, but I stepped in and let him know it was me and that I had overheard how poorly he treated his own daughter. I warned him if anything happened to Amber, he would deal with me.
The night she turned eighteen, Thor happily acknowledged the mate bond. I took her away from her father that same moment and swore to her that I would always treat her right. I did too. That’s what makes this so hard for me.
I lightly woke her up. “Baby doll, it’s time to wake up.”
She started to wake up in her usual cute and grumpy way with a little pout on her bottom lip and her eyebrows furrowed. Then the little grunt as she stretched.
I smiled sadly. “Good morning.”
She looked at me, and her eyes went flat, gutting me once again. “Morning.”
I sighed. “I’m going to shower unless you want to use the bathroom first.”
She turned over, “You go ahead.”
I tried to grab an opportunity for intimacy and say, “Do you…want to join me?”
“No.”
My heart felt like a knife just punctured it. Her answer was quick and decisive. Thor huffed and went back in my mind.
“We used to shower together all the time. Why not now?” I asked.
When I got to the dining hall, Mom and Dad were there, and I sat with them. Mom looks at me, “What’s wrong, Adrian?”
I sighed. I can’t lie to my mother. All those kids who could lie to their parents are lucky in a way. None of Mom’s pups could ever pull that off. Roxie would tell her immediately.
“Just an argument with Amber,” I said without giving any details.
Dad looked at me, “Do you want to talk about it, son?”
I shook my head, “No.”
“Lie.”
I looked up at my mother and sighed. “I do, but I don’t. I was hoping you could talk to Amber for me, Mom. I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong, and she won’t talk to me.”
Mom smiled, “Of course, Adrian.”
“Thanks, Mom.”
