Aric POV
Watching Sinclair work is interesting. She told me she was a hitman and that surveillance is part of the job. I have never seen her look focused.
We have been monitoring for about a week, and she has already documented and established a pattern. We also understand the security around the small estate where Diljit Mandeb lives. We haven’t seen Cherise, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t there.
Sinclair managed to tap into the security infrastructure established there as well. She said getting inside would be easy enough, but didn’t think it would be needed.
Today was different, though. Today, Diljit left his company early. Instead of driving west, he drove east. Sinclair followed him, while I watched her tail Diljit. When she is working, she doesn’t talk as much, I’ve noticed. She is very serious, and her expression looks like she is thinking everything through in calculations.
“This is the way to the airport,” she said quietly. “He is picking up someone.”
“Maybe that’s why we haven’t seen Cherise. She hasn’t been spotted at all,” I suggested.
“Maybe. We will see when we get there,” Sinclair said.
Sinclair continued to follow, then went to the top floor of the parking deck with binoculars. I didn’t even know she had those with her. Where does she keep that stuff?
She was looking over the edge at an angle, so no one would see her if they looked up. After thirty minutes, she pointed, “There. That must be Cherise,” she said.
“How do you know?”
“She has a tattoo on her forearm, and Diljit has his hand on her back possessively,” she said.
We hurried back to the car and slowly made our way out of the parking deck. As we came to the first floor of the parking deck, we saw Diljit and Cherise turn right at the traffic light.
“This way will get them to their estate,” Sinclair said.
“Do you want to cut them off and talk to them?”
“No. Right now, I’m monitoring,” she said.
But then Diljit’s car stopped and pulled over. Sinclair continued driving until the passenger-side door opened and Cherise stepped out. She simply looked straight at Sinclair and me before raising an eyebrow.
“Shit,” Sinclair said.
“Shit is right; how did she spot us? You weren’t following close,” I noted.
“Let’s find out,” Sinclair said as she pulled over.
“What? Are you insane?”
“Yeah, I kinda am,” Sinclair said with a smile and then grabbed her gun and put it behind her back.
She stepped out of the car, and I followed behind her. As we got closer, I could smell it. That’s why she spotted us.
“Sinclair, we need to go,” I said. I will not lose another sister.
Cherise’s eyes narrowed at Sinclair, “I suggest you leave, little girl. Don’t cause trouble you can’t handle.”
“Oh, but mommy dearest, didn’t you cause trouble for me, first?”
Diljit looked shocked, “Mommy dearest? Cherise, who is she?”
Sinclair didn’t let her answer, “Didn’t mom tell you she put me up for adoption when I was barely born?”
“WHAT?!”
“Diljit…Get. In. The. Car. Now!” Cherise said through gritted teeth, “She is lying.”
“Am I, mommy?” She pulled a copy of the adoption records from her bag and tossed it to Diljit. “I guess you are my stepdad then, huh?”
Diljit looked like he wanted to strangle Cherise. “You kept this from me?”
“She isn’t my daughter! Get in the fucking car, Diljit.”
Cherise came rushing towards Sinclair, but all she did was smirk. I was ready to jump, but before I could, Sinclair did a floor sweep and knocked Cherise to the ground. Then she put her in a straight four-corner Judo hold. When the fuck did she learn that?
I hear Cherise struggle. “No, I’m not your daughter, am I, Cherise? You took me from my mother, though. You took me from my father. I grew up being bounced from foster home to foster home. I had a twin sister I never met. My parents are dead. The only person I have left is my brother. So why did you and Ronan take me?” she growled.
Cherise stopped struggling. “You were a twin?”
