Kaia POV
His eyes are full of concern. Sinclair and Isaiah immediately sit up. Clearly, there is a sense of the shift in his behavior, too. The once confident attorney looks truly shaken.
“What happened, Mr. Fellman?” I asked.
“I went to the house to retrieve the document from the safe as you instructed. As soon as I opened the safe, there was no paperwork, but a video of your father started playing. I managed to record the audio. In it, he said that no one is safe from what is coming. He is on the winning side, and you are just getting in the way,” he began, but then added. “When the video finished, sirens were set off. The office started filling with some kind of toxin. I had to jump from the second-floor balcony, and that was after forcefully breaking through the doors. There was a second when I thought I wouldn’t be able to get through.”
Oh. My. Goddess.
Mr. Fellman continued talking, though. “After I came to in the hospital, a nurse came in and had a syringe. She said that I needed to tell you to waive all the charges against your father, or the next time, I wouldn’t make it out alive. My assistant is black ops trained. This vehicle is built like a tank. I have upgraded security in my office and home. I’ve never been that close to death before. I’ve never been so brazenly threatened either. What’s even crazier is that you told me over the phone that your dad is still claiming he’s innocent. There is zero chance of that, Kaia. He wants you dead, and I’m not sure I understand why.”
Isaiah holds me tightly, pushing calm through our bond. He feels the nerves and anger rising in me. My father is an awful man. What the hell is he playing at? Why does my death make his world a better place? I don’t understand anything.
“He’s not getting out of prison,” I said.
“With the kind of pull he has, I think it’s only a matter of time before he escapes. I think he is banking on you believing him, and if that plan falls through, then he will resort to escaping.”
“Do you have the recording?”
“In my safe, at the office,” he replied.
“I want to hear it.”
