Julian POV
He’s brought into my office with a bag over his head. He is shaking, and I’m pretty sure he is one sneeze away from pissing all over himself. Conrad Cross. He’s an absolute pussy. Actually, that might be an insult to pussies.
He falls to his knees, and I signal for the bag to be removed. When my man does, Conrad looks up with pure fear in his eyes. Humans really bother me. Hunters not so much. Men like Ronan at least don’t fear the unknown. They attack it head-on. It’s men like Conrad.
I read his file. Men like him are pathetic. He was collecting a check for caring for Sinclair, but she grew up looking poor, while his kids were dressed in the nicest clothes. You could tell from school yearbook pictures the immediate difference.
“Cross,” I began. “Tell me what you know about Sinclair Cross.”
“Sinner? That’s why I’m here? What has she done?” He asked in rapid succession.
“Sinner?”
“That’s her nickname.”
“Explain to me how she came to be in your care for years,” I ordered.
He went on to explain how he and his wife decided to take in foster kids. Then she left him. He wanted the money, so he decided to take Sinclair in. He gave everything to his kids and made her sleep on the couch. The small foyer closet held four outfits for her, and she had to ‘earn her keep’ to stay. Considering she had been tossed from one house to the next, she did everything she could to keep a roof over her head.
I am not a sentimental guy, but even I feel bad for the woman. Still, it doesn’t answer how she became a hitman or how she learned tech so damn well.
“How did she get into the hitman business?”
Conrad cocked his head. “Hitman?”
I scoffed. “You clearly know nothing about Sinclair. She was a hitman. Her specialty was tech. Then she turned about a year ago.”
“Turned?”
“Into a werewolf,” I said with an evil grin.
He started laughing nervously. “A werewolf. Ha! Ha! Good one.”
I shifted my hand to my claw. I stared at him. “A werewolf.”
His eyes went wide, and sure enough, he pissed himself. “Please don’t kill me.”
He’s shaking, and he smells like piss. I’m going to kill him. He treated that girl like a slave while she was still a kid. I am evil in a lot of ways, but I don’t like hurting kids.
“If you want me to spare your life, then tell me something useful.”
He started stammering. “Um, in her file, there was a keepsake from her mother. I used to look at it. It was a necklace. It had a purple stone in it. But it wasn’t a normal stone. It glowed. It never stopped glowing.”
“Glowed? Do you have the necklace?” I asked.
“No, but I had looked it up, and it was something called Purple Atlantis…I think.”
This got my attention. “Purple Atlantonite?”
“Yeah. Yeah…that’s it.” She has that necklace with her.
