Aiden POV
I reached Thalia, and she practically collapsed. “Why?! Why, Aiden?! It’s not fair!”
I’m holding her, and tears have been falling for some time now. I can’t help it. My Dad is in critical condition. Isaiah is injured. Renz and Rory are both being treated for severed bonds. Lacey, Jonah, and several warriors are dead. Julian is still nowhere to be found. How could this happen?
Kaia rushes into the hospital. “Where’s Isaiah?” She is in tears. She was our sniper in the trees. It came in handy, but it wasn’t enough. Had she been where I was, maybe she could have helped Rory, and Jonah would still be alive.
“I’m here, Trouble,” Isaiah called out. His voice was shaky, but he was alive. “What did I miss?”
“Isaiah!” Kaia ran to him and cried into his chest.
I looked at Isaiah seriously. “Dad is in critical condition. Lacey and Jonah were killed. Renz and Rory are getting treated for severed bond pain.”
Isaiah’s eyes widened. “Where’s Mom?”
“I’m here,” she called from behind us. Her eyes were puffy and red from crying. “Your Father is stable, but he lost too much blood. He is in a coma. We don’t know how long it’ll be before he wakes up.”
I feel crestfallen. My dad is my hero. He can’t be in a coma. Reid and Navy come in, and Navy is inconsolable. I walked up to her with Thalia and hugged her. “I’m so sorry, Navy.”
“She was protecting me. She died because of me,” she said, and I could hear the guilt in her voice.
“No,” Thalia said. “She died because she loved you more than her own life, Navy. Her death proves that, so don’t let her sacrifice and love for you be shadowed by guilt.”
Navy hugged Thalia and kept crying.
“I’m going to check on Renz and Rory,” I said quietly, and Navy looked up.
“I’ll check on my Dad. We need each other right now,” she said. She looked to Reid, and he followed her, with one arm around her shoulder.
I go to see Rory. Mom, Adrian, Isaiah, Thalia, Kaia, and Sinclair follow me. As soon as we see her, she is curled into a ball on the bed. She is crying and screaming into her pillow.
Mom sobs and runs to Rory. “MOM! Jonah is gone. Why?! Why did he jump in front of me?!”
“Oh, my baby. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
I feel guilt claw at me. I didn’t get to them in time. If I had been thirty seconds quicker, they would be alive.
I dropped to my knees and let the tears come. “I’m sorry, Rory. I wasn’t quick enough. I am so sorry.”
Rory looked at me with pained eyes. “No, Aiden. It’s not your fault. There were too many. I only want my Jonah back.”
I grabbed my sister’s hand. I kissed the back and pressed it to my chest. “On my life, I am going to avenge Jonah. I will avenge everyone who died today.”
