Disgusting? The word echoed in Conrad's mind, a bitter pill to swallow.
No one had ever dared to speak to him that way. And now she, his wife, found him disgusting.
The pain was so intense it felt like a physical blow. "Annika, what have I done that's so disgusting?" he asked through clenched teeth.
Her gaze was cold and distant, a look he couldn't bear. It was as if a knife had been brutally plunged into his chest, the agony making his stomach churn. For a moment, he wanted nothing more than to silence her, to physically stop the pain, but he held back. He didn't want Serena to come between them and desperately needed Annika's understanding. Summoning every ounce of patience he possessed, he tried to explain. "Serena is in danger. She can't stay at her villa. In fact, she can't stay anywhere else. Is that clear enough for you?"
"Perfectly," Annika nodded, her smile still glacial. "Anything else?"
Looking at her, Conrad was at a loss for words. His fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. "I want you to coexist peacefully with her," he said, his voice strained. "As soon as the baby is born, I'll send her away."
It was a promise, but Annika seemed to dismiss it with contempt. She met his eyes and said, "Don't worry, Conrad. As long as she doesn't start trouble, I won't care about a thing."
*And you, Conrad, are no longer worthy of my concern,* she added silently.
With that, she turned and walked upstairs without a backward glance.
Conrad stood frozen for a long moment before finally retreating to his study, where he remained for the rest of the afternoon.
Annika, on the other hand, slept soundly. In the evening, Lana came to call her for dinner, but Annika said she wasn't hungry. Lana relayed the message to Conrad downstairs.
Conrad sat stiffly at the dining table. Across from him, Serena paused, spoon halfway to her lips. She looked up at him with wide, innocent eyes. "Conrad, Annika must be angry. I feel so terrible for intruding on you both."
Conrad didn't answer, his lips pressed into a hard line. After a moment of silence, he instructed Lana, "Bring her meal up to her."
"Yes, sir."
