"I lost a lot gambling recently," he mumbled. "And the stock market's been terrible. Just losses all around."
"Fine," Annika said through gritted teeth. She turned to the thugs. "Give me a deadline. I'll get the money together and contact you."
Seeing that someone was actually going to pay Tyler's debt, a smile crept into the leader's eyes. "One week. If you don't have it, I'll drag you to the Celestial Club to work the tables." Before leaving, he aimed a final kick at Tyler. "Lucky bastard, finding a dumb broad like this."
After all, what woman who pays a man's debts isn't a dumb broad?
The thugs left, and the staff began sweeping up the broken glass and righting the overturned furniture. Annika apologized to a server before helping Tyler onto a sofa. She grabbed some napkins to clean the blood from his face. His injuries weren't severe, but they weren't minor either. She wanted to take him to the hospital, but he refused to go, sitting stubbornly on the couch.
Giving up, Annika sat with him. "Why aren't you focusing on your business instead of playing the stock market?" she asked.
Tyler didn't answer, simply lighting a cigarette. The white smoke curled around his face, veiling his deep, somber expression. When he remained silent, Annika pressed on. "Belinda is pregnant. No matter how it started, you should be by her side right now."
That seemed to be the last straw. Tyler crushed the cigarette, his voice erupting with anger. "Don't you dare mention that woman to me!"
The moment the words were out, he seemed to regret them. "I'm sorry... Annika," he stammered. "She was never pregnant. It was all a lie."
As if remembering something, Tyler let out a bitter, sarcastic laugh. "I'm such a fucking idiot." He punctuated the statement by slapping himself hard across the face. If it hadn't been for that bitch Belinda, he wouldn't be in this mess.
Annika was about to say something comforting when she saw a couple walk in. The woman was a perfectly made-up Belinda. The man with her was older, though sharply dressed in a suit. His arm was around her waist, and he whispered something in her ear that made her giggle and press herself against him, purring, "Oh, you."
